I'm heartbroken to share this news about our dear friend and colleague, @ChrisGSeaton.
ALT Screenshot of a message from Shopify's Ruby and Rails Infrastructure team that includes: Our dear friend and colleague Chris Seaton passed away last Saturday, December 3rd. Chris was an important part of our team at Shopify, and a notable figure in the Ruby community, and we are deeply saddened by our collective loss. Chris accomplished much in his life. He completed a Ph.D., rose to be Squadron Leader in the British Army Reserve, and started a young family. Chris began the TruffleRuby project in 2013 as an intern at Oracle Labs and stewarded it into a full-fledged Ruby implementation. Chris advanced the state of the art in dynamic language optimization, co-authoring 16 publications, contributing to countless others, and establishing both the Ruby Bibliography archive of Ruby research publications and the Ruby Compiler Survey. For his efforts, he was a Ruby Prize finalist in 2016. Chris’s papers, essays, and code contributions are currently archived at chrisseaton.com.

If you held a grain of sand up to the sky at arm’s length, that tiny speck is the size of Webb’s view in this image. Imagine — galaxies galore within a grain, including light from galaxies that traveled billions of years to us!

The number of people joining Shopify RnD *today* alone is greater than the size of the RnD team when I joined 6 years ago 🤯. To my ~300 new colleagues: Welcome! 🚀

Back to work today after my first full month holiday in 30 years. Now I understand what my European friends have been going on about. Month-long summer vacations are something I could get used to!
My career has come full circle. My current team at work is building a platform featuring extensions, extension points, and components. I could have said the same thing 20 years ago 😂
Some Shopify colleagues bought 40K N95 masks from @masks4allCanada and donated them to essential works in Ontario Covid hotspots. The demand is far greater so they are raising funds for a second batch. A great way to contribute directly where it's needed! gofund.me/ddacdeb1

The team had way too much fun with d3, three, and glsl shaders. Enjoy the big upgrade to the #bfcm2020 live orders map by @ShopifyEng.

This was a fascinating project my team took on earlier this year to optimize how the Shopify platform stores and retrieves some of its most critical data using #mysql and #rubyonrails
In our latest post, @jarthorne shares how using composite primary keys unlocked massively more efficient data access for our primary Rails Application. Also, he'll show you how you can use the same trick to optimize your own applications.

Later today, a robot from earth will land on an asteroid 2 million miles away, suck up some rocks with a special zero-g vacuum cleaner, and take off again 10 seconds later. Humans can do amazing things 🤯 #OSIRISREx

I thought my kids were unusual for being so excited to be back in school, but according to the latest #OCDSB parent survey the sentiment looks overwhelmingly positive. Great work teachers and staff making kids safe and feeling welcome in schools 👏
A data point on Ottawa covid test lines in case it's useful for others: arrived 08:30 at Heron road with my daughter and out by 12:30. New arrivals were behind turned away by about 10:30 #ottawa #CovidTesting

I remember when @jarthorne spoke at @DevOpsDaysTO in 2018 about Black Friday at @shopify - I loved the story about how they watched the live feed of a coworkers chicken coop while being on standby for any crisis that might come up.
