In the US: - 30% of food in grocery stores is thrown away. - Wasted food from retail is valued at ~2x profit from food sales. - Unsold/uneaten food represents $418B of unrealized value. Meanwhile, ~30M Americans rely on undercapitalized food banks for supplementing calories.

Immensely grateful to be working with the incredible Nourish Team at Doernbecher and 10 local food pantries on this project. 'Food for Health' is an innovative program that ensures food security is never an issue for recovering children or their families. Healthy, whole foods can be picked-up or delivered to their homes. And it's all done within a few clicks (in any language). news.ohsu.edu/2024/12/09/ohs…

Failing the 7th audit in a row and being unable to account for “huge portions” of the Dept’s $4.126tn in assets is outrageous. Accountability is what has me most excited about @DOGE Maybe after we shine a light on these corrupt companies, we can follow up by channeling those resources to strategic investments that better the lives of millions of Americans (and pay dividends for centuries), e.g. ensuring every American has food on the table, a good education, ability to start businesses, and so on.

DoorDash's recent SNAP report highlights many of the benefits similar technology can bring to food pantries: • People feel more dignity & support in asking for help • Increases accessibility & supports food healthy choices • Reduces time commitment & relieves transportation burden I applaud @DoorDash for making it easier for Americans to access better food! So PROUD of this partnership between modern medicine and nutritional health, with @full_pantry Now, children & their families leaving the Children's Hospital are connected with local food pantries, and get healthy, whole foods delivered. This is patient-driven: they order from their phone, in their language, in private. For families who have spent weeks in the hospital or are faced with huge medical expenses, this can be the difference between having food on the table -- or not. Thank you to my great team at Full! Let's do this everywhere!

A lot of food pantries and local orgs saw more grant opp during COVID. Since then, funding is drying up. The problem: food insecurity continues to rise... by a lot. 58% is wild. We need to create efficiencies + connect CBOs to non-gov organizations with a focus on health related social needs, who can provide funding (eg, health care providers).
Paule Pachter, President & CEO of Long Island Cares, addresses the 58% rise in food insecurity on Long Island from @FeedingAmerica’s latest report, especially impacting children. We’re working together to tackle this issue. Watch here: buff.ly/45uhVp3 #FoodInsecurity

1 month. That's the time left to join me in supporting POBC Pantry. This food pantry is nothing short of groundbreaking. It's immigrant-founded, volunteer-led, and they've invested in building new technology (which is literally unheard of for food pantries). It started after their church's kitchen saw repeated break-ins (people stealing food). It's based in one of the most neglected neighborhoods in Oregon. This is where businesses shutter and leave. Their Director, Betty Brown, is outside in the street welcoming families herself. Rain or snow, their team is there. And it's working. It's grown from a few families a month to over 80,000 hardworking people served last year. The vast majority (95%+) are working people, home-bound elderly/disabled, and children. These people often transition OUT of the pantry and into volunteers. It's humbling, heart-wrenching, and inspiring. I can't stress this enough. Every CENT counts. 100% goes toward food, facilities, and essentials. I've never seen waste in the 4 years I've volunteered my time here. Let's show them the power of @X. @elonmusk and @Jason, if you're looking for something good to organically boost (not for profit, but for social capital), please check them out. This is not your normal 501(c)3. These people get @*&! done. Please show them support at: gala.pobcpantry.com If you want to learn more, please check out this short promo for their gala.

Nearly 1 year since this tweet. While hikes in food prices are slowing, USDA's latest numbers now show 44M people live in households that have difficulty getting enough food (up from 33M in 2021). Is this the year we close begin closing the loop on inefficiency & food waste?

There are a lot of myths about people who are homeless in California: They’re from another state. They don’t want a job. They don’t want a home. A sweeping UCSF study paints a different picture:cone of people who were working & living in poverty. nytimes.com/2023/06/20/us/ca…
