I walked through a little cemetery today. Lydia here, born in 1760 or 1761, managed to have a lifespan that is roughly equal to the modern U.S. median for women. Well done, Lydia. Whoever you were.
Same little cemetery, a few feet apart. I wonder if Sally and Nancy were childhood friends. #mementomori

Healthcare professionals have firsthand knowledge of what works, what doesn't, and what needs to change. But too often, health policy is shaped without enough input from the people who are in the thick of it. CMH's new writing program can help you get your voice heard.

The fact that everyone needs healthcare eventually does not establish that everyone is entitled to have it provided through a collective system. Each individual is a distinct person with his or her own life to lead.

Medicare for All doubles down in the wrong direction. We already have a system that is half-run by the government if you broadly include all the spending, regulation, and influence. Advocates want to take the frustration with that system and use it to sell you a 75%, 90%, or 100% government-run system. Instead we should be asking for freedom in healthcare and medicine.
Recently I was asked if I find it hard to ask for funding for @centermodhealth (not is it hard to find funding, which is yes, but is it hard to ask). My answer is no, not if the person or foundation already advertises that they're looking to support work that advances freedom, liberty, better health, etc. I believe in our work. I think it's good, needed, and that we're making progress. So I have no trouble in the slightest.
What I find harder, though, is asking people or organizations who don't already get the importance of supporting work that advances their values. A deeper change about how one thinks about life and values needs to happen there first. I'll try a little to make that case, but that's almost outside the scope.
One line in a 2024 JAMA paper stood out to me: "Psychiatrists are more than twice as likely to accept new self-pay patients than they are to accept new Medicaid patients." That speaks to variable #44 in our Health Freedom Index, which captures whether states allow Medicaid patients to engage in direct pay for covered services.

Albrechtsberger's harp concerto in C is lovely if you like to cultivate household tranquility in your family's get-ready-for-school routine. Wish old Johann had written more than just the one.

"We live under a republican form of government. We need forever to remember that representative government does represent. A careless, indifferent representative is the result of a careless, indifferent electorate." -Coolidge, On the Nature of Politics
A government-administered limited public option is not my idea of an ideal, but it *could* be the way out of the health reform stalemate we've been in for the past two decades, assuming you couple it with a simultaneous radical deregulation of the private market. I think if free-market advocates insist on rejecting that as too much of a compromise, then fine, but let's hear some other strategies.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. This is a 2014 song by French pop/world artist Indila?!?! I'm experiencing a HUGE false memory of thinking I knew it from old movies. E.g., Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. And no, I'm not just confusing it with the Schubert piano trio. youtu.be/rd-mG2gNM9s?is=9aSh…

Today is National Donor-Advised Fund Day! If you have a donor-advised fund, today is a great day to put it to work. The Center for Modern Health is working hard for markets and freedom in healthcare. If that's a cause you support, get in touch about making a grant from your DAF.
