How do tiny cracks lead to large faults? @jaodynamics, @leo_petit1, and other @Geosciences_ENS and @Sorbonne_Univ_ collaborators take a closer look at this question.

🌊 DOCUMENTAIRE

New paper out in @ScienceAdvances! Here our very talented former postdoc @bar_oryan establishes a link between diffuse upper plate seismicity and long-term deformation encoded in subduction landscapes. Congrats, Bar! science.org/doi/10.1126/scia… @_geoLuca @boris_gailleton @seismolucy

Les collines abyssales se forment non pas comme des marches d’escalier, mais comme des marches d’escalator, qui s’ouvrent, puis se referment à mesure que les reliefs migrent sur le tapis roulant des plaques tectoniques.

Nature research paper: Mid-ocean ridge unfaulting revealed by magmatic intrusions go.nature.com/3VQ7t8j
New paper out in @Nature today! Turns out #MidOceanRidges can still surprise us… 👇🏻 nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
What’s neat is that the 2022 swarm revealed a mechanism that leaves a significant mark on the fabric of the ocean floor: Mid-ocean ridges operate much like escalators, shaping step-like hills that first grow, then partially close as they move off-axis.
so… turns out there was a bit more to it nature.com/articles/s41586-0… @zlliu_GEO @escartin @BickertManon
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is lighting up! Seismicity started on Monday near the Charlie-Gibbs transform, with an M5.8 normal faulting event. Has been migrating south at ~1 km/hr since then. A once-in-50-yr dike intrusion event? (EQs relocation courtesy of G. Ekstrom @LamontEarth) 🌋
