Reading Zuckerberg's AI manifesto, I got stuck on one omission — and what it says about how far behind the curve we are in the AI buildout. Nowhere in its 6,500 words is this one: climate. Never mind what AI may someday invent. Its physical footprint already represents the most significant opportunity in a generation to modernize and decarbonize America’s electric grid — bringing clean power, storage and lower electricity bills to millions of people. And we are squandering it. The manifesto holds up a project requiring roughly 5 GW of new gas-fired power as a model of community benefit — when that same extraordinary demand could be used to massively scale solar, storage and a modernized electric grid. Its major proof point? $50K bonuses for Richland Parish teachers. That’s a lot — until you realize the bonuses came from taxes Meta was required to pay. Or compare their ~$22M price tag with as much as $10 BILLION in tax breaks for Meta. The biggest climate irony of all? The whole project is being built in a Louisiana floodplain, and in the event of a debilitating natural disaster, Meta negotiated the right to walk scot-free. But the teacher bonuses actually are a model — just not in the way Zuckerberg intends. They show what government can require in exchange for projects of this scale. Richland Parish and other communities should get the jobs and investment that come with the AI boom. But we should demand a much better bargain in return. Want to build gigawatts of new power for AI? Make it clean. Connect it to the grid. Let surrounding communities share in the infrastructure — through rooftop solar, batteries, EVs and virtual power plants. And use all that new investment to drive everyone’s electric bill toward $0. AI could usher in thousands of new jobs building the clean, cheap electric grid America needs. Instead, we're spending billions to lock in a new generation of fossil plants. Until there's a real community compact, let’s be honest: the future is still being designed by billionaire oligarchs behind closed doors. What everyone else gets is the bill. Even if Zuck is spinning things, the teacher bonuses are in fact a model: statutory and regulatory requirements for a better bargain: if you want to build gigawatts of new power for AI, make it clean, connect it to the grid, and use it to drive everyone’s electric bill toward $0. Nothing like checking mortgage rates and oil markets at the same time. This is what people are actually dealing with: trying to buy a home while rates swing based on war in Iran.
