Storms form early this afternoon in central MO to western IL with a threat for large hail. As the threat area shifts southeast through the evening, storms will become more numerous with the threat shifting toward damaging winds. #mowx #ilwx #stlwx

ALT Graphic shows the progression of thunderstorms across the region this afternoon as well as the shift in thunderstorm threats. Storms form between Noon and 4PM in central MO toward western IL. As the threat area shifts southeast the threats also shift toward damaging winds. Storms should exit the region by 9PM.

Teachers and administrators have a lot going on and it's all too common (as demonstrated by this dangerous incident) for crucial paperwork to be mislaid/overlooked by school staff even when a student's life literally depends on the instructions on that piece of paper.

For that matter, you have to remain vigilant just to make sure that the 504 plan is even READ, at all, by the teachers and staff who are supposed to read it. I would email every teacher at the start of the year to ask "Have you had a chance to review the 504 plan yet?"

For the most part we were able to work things out, and having the 504 really helped. My point is just that even though 504s are really useful, you have to remain vigilant even with a 504 and make sure it's enforced.

That said, I think that if we had not had the 504 plan, things would have been MUCH WORSE. Because we had the plan we could point to it and explain what the specific violations were. This did often inspire staff to correct issues.

I would say we had a 504 violation about once a month when my kid was in high school (sometimes the accommodations for his learning disability, sometimes for FA). It's challenging to sue a district once a month. I did try to file a complaint with OCR once but it went nowhere.
My son with a life-threatening peanut allergy graduated from high school and just headed off to college. DM me if you want me to send you a list of the accommodations that were his high school 504 plan. There are some things we did that I think might be helpful for you.

Check your state's laws here: foodallergy.org/our-initiati…

You should check the law again. Every state in the US now has a law that allows students to self-carry epinephrine with a doctor's authorization. Your school district is probably misinterpreting rules for other meds and misapplying them to epi.
Ideally schools ought to be sent fresh stock straight from the manufacturer. Then, assuming they stored it properly, they would only have to replace the epi yearly or after use.
The shelf life is actually at least 12 months at the time of manufacture, sometimes longer depending on the injector brand. If you are getting epi auto-injectors with 6 month expiration dates, the pharmacy is selling you old stock and hoping you won't notice.

I agree that 504 plans are very helpful and should be standard for food allergies, but even when you have one you can't be sure the school staff are following it (speaking from personal experience).

Unfortunately in the US system, the laws that govern how schools handle accommodations for disabilities and life-threatening medical conditions can basically ONLY be enforced if someone sues after a school violates them. That is why people are suggesting she sue the school.

There are laws allowing children to self-carry epinephrine with a doctor's permission in every US state. Your school is quite possibly in violation of the law, but more importantly, you are putting children's lives at risk with this policy and you should think hard about that.

Did your school keep scissors locked up in the school office too, @Roxanne__Resist ? Because those are legitimately more dangerous to children than an EpiPen. If you can teach a 2nd grader not to stab another student with scissors you can teach them not to misuse epi.
Replying to @Roxanne__Resist
The dose of epinephrine in an auto-injector is quite safe. There is almost no risk that a child could seriously harm themselves by using an EpiPen. There is on the other hand a substantial risk of serious harm involved if epinephrine use is delayed during a reaction.
So, Trump officially endorsed "Eric" in the MO Senate GOP primary race, even though more than one Republican named Eric is running. Both Eric Greitens and Eric Schmitt have now accepted the endorsement. THIS IS EMBARRASSING AND ALL THREE OF THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED.
In today's tale of typical Trump camp competence . . .
Trump endorses “Eric” in Missouri GOP Senate race.
But there are two Eric’s …
Is it @EricGreitens or @Eric_Schmitt?

Election Day is tomorrow! Missourians should be able to vote easily and without fear. Voting has always been important to me - so important, that for my first election, I drove home from university to vote on my 18th birthday.
