I wrote about my grandmother, Chien-Shiung Wu — a pioneering nuclear physicist who’s on a 2021 USPS stamp — but also about loss, immigrants, fame, scientific ambition, women in STEM, and the questions we have about our families that are too late to ask. washingtonpost.com/lifestyle…

It’s not lost on me that rape culture reports are coming from elite universities: Cornell, UChicago, Columbia. I went to Yale. These places aren’t associated with frat culture, but they come with a baked-in sense of superiority, esp for young men as future masters of the universe

Was at art supplies store in Brooklyn and this guy was buying poster board and tons of heart stickers. It’s his 1yr anniversary with his gf & he’s making a collage of their time together & is gonna tell her to look at her window as she leaves for work. Gen Z is going to be ok

It was so sweet and romantic, the cashier and I both forgot what we were doing when he told us his plans. He’d also bought ragged-edged sketch paper, a metal stamp engraved with a heart, and red wax. Said he was going to use it to seal a letter

The women on both sides of me checked the time on their phones at least 4 times each during the final 1/3 of the Mike Leigh movie. It was like a whack-a-mole of unexpected light. Dudes, checking the time on a bright screen STILL COUNTS as using your phone in a movie!! #nyff

It’s really not that hard. You check the run time, give yourself a buffer, and don’t plan anything during the movie you chose to go to. And then you turn your phone OFF. Like all the way. You get to enjoy the movie and, as a bonus, respect the people around you #nyff

When Jenny Slate accidentally dropped an F-bomb on #SNL her very first episode as a cast member, she eventually got shut out of sketches and left the show after one season. She lost her whole ass job. And she’s an amazing, superior human being. Good role model for Shane Gillis

Anne Hathaway is such a real one! It’s like poetry, the way she talks about OG Anunoby

Wise thing my therapist said: Reality is that sometimes you’ll get what you want, sometimes you won’t. You can’t control it. But what you can do is accept that sometimes you’ll hit bumps, and have a robust sense of optimism while taking lots of action.

Wanna be clear: Luca Guadagnino’s ARTIFICIAL is a horror comedy. About the destruction of humanity. In real time. You’re laughing at the ridiculous characters & also THESE PEOPLE EXIST, they’re running the world, and the info in the movie is already old. Fucking terrifying #nyff

All respect to Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, but it’s Yura Borisov who steals ARTIFICIAL. He nails the affect and idealism of so many tech nerds I know, with an affection and specificity that never falls into caricature. He’s endlessly human, and so, so good #nyff

Andrew Garfield says he remembers watching Sam Altman testify for Congress and thinking, “‘This guy is f***ing great!’… And here we are.” ARTIFICIAL, he says, is a much-needed “interrogation of who we’re giving all our autonomy, power, and data to.” #nyff

The @MTA really looked at the #nyff dates and declared that everyone in Williamsburg would have to endure a four train gauntlet to get to Lincoln Center this weekend. The L is shut down and it’s like American Gladiators, NYC cinephile edition.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
