NEW: The Trump DOJ has filed its response after a federal judge demanded answers about Trump’s post announcing detailed plans to overhaul the East Potomac golf course, despite DOJ telling the court just two days earlier that Trump had given the project only “preliminary thought.”
DOJ now says its lawyers weren’t representing Trump’s actual thinking, but merely interpreting his public statements.
But DOJ says any direct conversations with Trump would be protected by constitutional privileges, so it can’t disclose that to the court.
DOJ also argues that redesigning the golf course isn’t subject to review under the Administrative Procedure Act, comparing it to mowing the lawn.

In May, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum posted an East Potomac plan that showed no disruption to the public recreational areas around the golf course. At the time, I was hearing from sources with knowledge of the situation that the administration had no genuine interest in preserving these areas.
The plan released today by President Trump confirms that the administration intends to push the golf course all the way out to the edges of the island. If Burgum had acknowledged this in May, there would have been more local outrage about the proposal. (And there has already been a lot.)
Ultimately, Burgum should have to address whether he knowingly misled the public.

Tearing down the East Wing and ruining the Reflecting Pool are bad, but symbolically so. This makes the experience of living in DC as a normal person – turning a place for cycling, fishing, birding, picnicking, and cheap golf into a playground for the rich – materially worse.

Called it. @KatieZacharia inadvertently revealed that Trump was in fact the one who directed the violation of at least three federal laws, ignoring orders from a judge once again.
If this is in fact East Potomac Park, which I believe it is after comparing Google Maps and commercial satellite imagery, @KatieZacharia may have inadvertently provided additional evidence in the court case against the Interior Department regarding a golf course they’re attempting to build in violation of several federal laws. The Trump administration has argued there is no “final plan” in court documents, but this map and trees being removed would suggest there is a plan and direction is coming straight from Trump.
