Scattered across North America, four strangers matched as siblings on @Ancestry and @23andMe. Over the years, they collected more matches. Together, the siblings uncovered a story that is more than a sprawling family secret. My piece for @wpmagazine washingtonpost.com/magazine/…
Jumping in from vacation (👋 from Paris) to share my latest for @CityCast_DC. I spoke with some of DC's most prolific developers to get a sense of why building in the city has slowed. TLDR: Investors don't want to put their money into D.C. 🧵dc.citycast.fm/business-deve…
Some of the pressures are not unique to the District: Interest rates remain high, and inflation is driving up material costs. But D.C. also has a unique rap sheet that scares investors away. ⬇️
The District's high rent delinquency rate, weakened labor force, bureaucratic bottlenecks and unpredictable zoning processes make it hard for investors to see how or when they’ll make their money back. I break down each issue here: dc.citycast.fm/business-deve…

D.C. police told me some new details in the tragic scooter accident that left Talib Shakir dead last week:
- neither Shakir nor the woman were wearing helmets
- Shakir was riding a private e-scooter that could reach up to 55 mph
- the woman was riding a ride-share scooter, which are capped at 10 mph in D.C.
- investigators have not yet determined how fast the scooters were going when they collided

D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen plans to still bring his Waymo-legalization bill up for a vote this fall — despite presumptive mayor elect Janeese Lewis George’s call for a delay. @ben_brasch

Note: The room is PACKED — as in, we’re running short on seats — for this hearing about revenue and tax proposals.

D.C. police are cracking down on e-bike/scooter rider safety.
This comes a week after Talib Shakir, Director of the Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizen Affairs, died in a e-scooter collision. The events leading to the collision remain unclear. I have asked MPD for more info.
MPD is focusing its street-safety outreach on e-bikes and e-scooters across DC beginning today, 10/16.
Reminders for riders:
1. Travel with the flow of traffic
2. Only one rider per device at a time
3. Always wear a helmet
This is a citywide effort, with increased efforts in the U-Street Corridor, Navy Yard, and Gallery Place-Chinatown.

Metro is using the L'Enfant Plaza station as a "laboratory" for trying out new ways to help people get in, around, and out of the transit system. A great story from our @washingtonsun reporting fellow @will_hofmann: washingtonsun.com/metro/metr…

A marathon meeting is about to start about future of funding the District. Tax nerds are aflutter! People are packing extra snacks! Pols are girding their bladders!

So far, the theme from CMs is that they want to hear about fairness (is everyone paying their fair share?); competitiveness (will these policies harm DC's ability to compete with our region and attract biz); spending (we can't just raise taxes, we need to scrutinize how we spend)
I’m at the DC council roundtable about tax proposals with @ben_brasch. It’s the most packed I’ve seen this room (granted I’ve only been on the beat for a few months.)
Former mayor @TonyWilliamsDC testified first. He heavily emphasized that these taxes are short-sighted. That it would push the current tax base that already provides the majority share of DC's taxes revenue.
"We need every tax payer to stay. Don't risk giving them a reason to leave. We need more tax payers to move here. Don't give them a reason to go somewhere else." @TonyWilliamsDC said.

The presumptive mayor-to-be taking a stand against AVs, as the council considers autonomous vehicle legislation. Waymo has shovels in the ground building depots in D.C.
“Our ability to teach and learn should never depend on whether or not an elevator works or whether three colleagues can carry us up the stairs,” one teacher said last week at a public council hearing.
Prolonged elevator outages at D.C. schools, often because of delays in parts needed for repair, have in some cases led staff to carry disabled students or colleagues in a “human elevator” up and down stairs for weeks. w/ @aangieoh washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/…
No better way to learn about tax policy, imo
We at @CityCast_DC are committed to getting Washingtonians to pay attention to the things that matter in our community. There's a huge revenue hearing Friday. So, cue the Minecraft.

The likely next mayor declares war on rats and promises an official “Rat Czar.” Just yesterday, her RAT Act was combined with @CMCHenderson’s REMY Act. Read more here: dc.citycast.fm/dc-politics/d…

Councilmembers on Wednesday merged two bills aimed at reducing the presence of rats in D.C. The bill would strengthen anti-rat enforcement, add ratproof trash cans to busy corridors and disallow dangerous rat poisons, among other things. @ben_brasch

I’ll be on @1a today talking about the trend of adults buying toys. I wrote many stories about this when I covered retail for WaPo (Squishmallows, Hot Wheels, Build-a-Bear). But I’ll be back to the DC business, development & real estate beat tomorrow on the @CityCast_DC podcast!
