Two nursing home investors accused of diverting $83M in taxpayer funds away from patient care just sold 10 NYC facilities for $557M, nearly 6x what they paid. A remarkable investigation by @adambrosio_ and C. J. Hughes into the business of nursing homes. crainsnewyork.com/real-estat…

Mamdani is about to say he wants NYC to get a cut of the revenue from public investments. Example No. 1: A $30 million quantum lab investment that gives the city 15% of NYU’s proceeds from inventions developed with city-funded equipment. City Hall hopes to expand the model.

At a Crain’s breakfast this morning, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg said he is creating a new task force to investigate corporate fraud and antitrust violations, putting increased resources behind his second-term push to crack down on white-collar crime.

40 minutes passed before Mamdani’s name came up, and even then it was only a passing reference during an exchange about other topics. The mayor finally became a topic of discussion only once the moderator pressed Blakeman on his past remarks about Mamdani. crainsnewyork.com/politics-p…

New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have reached a deal to abolish NYC's horse carriage industry — a critical breakthrough in a decadeslong, politically fraught effort to ban the tourist attraction. politico.com/news/2026/10/13…

“He’s got a gun”
This is the body-worn camera footage from the first NYPD officers on scene in Marble Hill last night. They responded to a 911 call for a male shot and transported the individual who was shot to the hospital to get medical care.

Shoutout to @hollypret and @TimmyFacciola_, who were among those on the ground early in Marble Hill tonight while many of us were trying to piece things together from afar. I leaned on their reporting, as I'm sure others did. Subscribe to Hell Gate and the Judge Street Journal.

On Sept. 11, an Equinix data center in Secaucus, New Jersey, leaked roughly 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel. Equinix took responsibility for the cleanup, and New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection says most of the fuel has been recovered, with no impact on the nearby wetlands and river. But residents are still asking: How much fuel remains?

In addition to momentum at the state level, the Mamdani administration is looking at potential scaffold law reforms. HPD put together a deck laying out what a legislative package could look like (agency emphasized that it has not taken a position yet): crainsnewyork.com/politics-p…

Nearing hour 10 of the hearing, a 15-year-old boy told lawmakers he had spent the last few weeks staying up late at night studying ways to make AI safer. “I could literally die if I don’t work on this,” he said. By that point, he hardly sounded alarmist. crainsnewyork.com/politics-p…

FWIW, Menin's office said last week that all four companies had agreed to testify in person. That obviously did not happen. OpenAI and Meta apparently switched to remote testimony late yesterday afternoon, and I'm now told Anthropic and Google had always planned to be remote.
