having lots of fun

I'll never understand doomer takes on ecommerce. "I would never start a @Shopify store in {insert year}" "You're not profitable until you hit X" "You have to launch thousands of ads" (way too sweaty) My favorite one is "The economy" It's all so noisy and honestly such a bad vibe (sorry if you're a bad vibe) My store is coming up on 2 years old and just passed $1m net. And I'm not trying that hard. I'm paying attention to other things. This is everything that we're doing. My VA sends email & sms with Shopify messaging Nearly all my ad spend is on catalog ads and I have 6 paid apps @Marpipe_HQ by @danpantelo @aftersell by @varunkundra @KnoCommerce by @JeremiahPrummer @VideoWiseHQ by @claudiucioba @tapcart, I don't know who made tapcart. and @AliaPopups by @iamshaanarora and @corylgill What else... We just got @memelordtech by @iamjasonlevin for $20 a month and it's rad, so we're going to try launching meme ads and we're tracking our competitors with @foreplay_co If you have an idea for a physical product that people might like, Shopify has made it pretty easy. Don't let the doomers stop you.

the bull case: Look, I am a known optimist. So it wont surprise everyone to hear I think things are going to be awesome. Here is my perspective: if you are still in business today, you survived at least 6 great crises in the past 6 years. you survived covid, you survived 2 painful presidential elections; you survived a WORSE gas crisis because of the ukraine conflict; you survived inflation; you survived interest rates rising faster than they ever have, you survived a banking crisis (SVB) if you are in business today, you are resilient are things great today? depends where you look. housing hasnt imploded. unemployment is steady. the largest, most important companies in human history are still growing and shipping new products there is weakness for sure- gas prices are the obvious one. They are the front line on a vibes-secion. the reason gas prices matter so much is because it is a commodity with no substitute good. if banana prices go up, you might eat more oranges. But you have to drive to work every day. if gas is $3 or $8 a gallon, doesnt matter, you have to drive. and I wish gas prices were lower. it is the most direct way to put more spending power back into the average amercians hands. but look at the chart- inflation-adjusted, it is a dollar cheaper than the ukraine war peak, and $2 cheaper than in 2008 the economy is more diversified, directly because of the ukraine war, so even with the Iran war dragging on, the impact has been less I'll tell you, I see the strength in my sales data. this is NOTHING like 2022. 2022 had runaway inflation. a real energy shock. no great new products or investments happening. in contrast- people are spending. people are employed. stock market is at all time highs (I think this plays a factor) the reality- it is an election year. both sides are in full-on doomer mode, trying to push a narrative. from my seat, as the ceo of a mid-size discretionary goods company: It is the greatest time to be building all decade.
I really believe economically we are cooked right now. The warning signs are everywhere. Gas prices + inflation on food / energy / water / etc. Disposable income continues to take a hit. This really is top of mind for me heading into BFCM. Thinking of ways in which to better market, better show value to the consumer. This means better, more focused ads that drive the user to want to buy with the money they got. That means hitting customers HARD now to add us as their MUST gift for the holidays.

You know that catchphrase podcast hosts keep repeating? It’s entirely possible I’ve talked about how much my team has loved using @PostscriptIO once a month for the last year on 1 to 100 @saasoperators But that was old postscript, before the founders ripped it apart and rebuilt it from scratch (and we churned for some reason) Now it’s better? And you can send email? And you can personalize messages to each customer with AI. So cool. Mega At the same time, everyone I know is still using Klaviyo. Maybe the switching costs are high? Maybe it’s easy for the team not to learn a new UI 🤷‍♂️ Whatever it is, PostScript is clearly the better product. The conversation with @ringmybeller is out now, and as usual @EmmettNaughton beat me to it.
Seeing @ringmybeller chat with @jackdoesecom and @rishabhmjain on their podcast. Dude seems so excited about the future of @PostscriptIO Love to see it.

I regularly meet people who say they really enjoy @saasoperators and learn stuff from listening to the convos @jackdoesecom @JeremiahPrummer and I have w guests. That meaningfully fills the tank for me more than any metrics (I actually literally have no idea what our listener numbers are… nor do I have the logins to check) Even if it weren’t for that, I learn something from every guest, which is fulfilling in itself.

always thought hating on people like hormozi was extremely loser coded there's never a rational explanation for it
i've always kinda turned my nose up at the typical growth/money/business guru types, but for whatever reason youtube started feeding me @AlexHormozi stuff lately and sweet baby jesus...i can't stop watching. yes, great business tactics i'm picking up, but his ability to distill problems while also showing an enormous amount of empathy for folks struggling is a master class and dammit just feels good to watch.

You can now Prompt The World for videos, the same way you call an uber. AI can automate entire ad systems. But the videos themselves should be real. So we built a brand new economy from scratch.

Charge more? What am I missing here?
To make sure our current users have an incredible experience and continued access to Astra, we are going to pause subscriptions to our $200 Pro plan. These put the most strain on our systems and we wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible. All other plans and the api remain available. There is no impact to existing accounts and we are working on adding more capacity as fast as we can. Thanks!
