H Hour is here. It's 1 pm in Holland. Operation Market Garden has officially begun. The fate of millions hangs in the balance. This massive Allied military operation aims to create a fast invasion route into northern Germany by bypassing the heavily fortified German Siegfried Line. If it works, it will save countless lives, and the war will surely be over by Christmas. The plan aims to seize a 64-mile (103 km) corridor of key bridges across major rivers and canals in German-occupied Netherlands. The Two Halves: "Market": The airborne phase. More than 34,000 paratroopers and glider troops from the U.S. 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, the British 1st Airborne Division, and the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade will be dropped behind enemy lines to capture vital bridges." "Garden": The ground phase. The British Second Army's XXX Corps will advance rapidly up a single main highway to link up with the airborne forces and push across the Rhine River. Will it work?
