Panjab fought hard to be able to celebrate Panjabi.
It faced anti-Panjabi campaigns, conspiracies, “dihati” labelling, and even mass efforts to convince Panjabi Hindus to register their mother tongue as Hindi.
Haryana, Himachal, UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand sacrificed their linguistic vibrancy and adopted Hindi to appear “modern”, but Panjab did not give up.
Punjab gets to celebrate Punjabi and its many dialects… but Uttarakhand? For some people we’re ‘just Hindi’.
Garhwali, Kumaoni, Jaunsari these aren’t dialects, they’re full languages with their own history, culture and identity.
Funny how people love our hills but stay blind to our voices. No doubt these languages are declared endangered by UNESCO.
