President Lincoln was the only President that hated Slavery and he officially ended it. Slave men became Republicans later ONLY because of President Lincoln and they were NEVER DEMOCRATS. Black men were Republicans until 1960. They changed over to the Democratic Party mainly because Democrat Candidate John F. Kennedy was able to get Martin Luther King Jr. released from jail. John F. Kennedy had started on Civil Rights before his sudden assassination. After his death, Robert F. Kennedy Sr. and Martin Luther King Jr. were the influencers in working with President Johnson on getting the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964. President Johnson also got rid of Jim Crow, however Republicans are trying to bring it back nationwide today. The Dixiecrats were formed in 1948 and some Democrats became Republicans. Later, it was a Vice Versa, Republicans became the party of the KKK probably influenced by Republican Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina who was a Democrat before becoming Leader of The Dixiecrats.
