ALT A Statement by Kids of Colour and Northern Police Monitoring Project on Behalf of Anugrah Abraham (Known as Anu) and His Family. Content Warning: Please note that this statement includes reference to suicide, police abuse and racism, and devastatingly, Anu’s death, aged 21. Full statement in bio. Read time: 12 minutes.

ALT Anu was a 21 year old from Greater Manchester. He was a student police officer serving on a placement with West Yorkshire Police as part of his degree at Leeds Trinity University. After experiencing stress and anxiety due to bullying and institutional racism during his time at the force, Anu tragically took his own life on the 3rd March 2023. On behalf of Anu’s family, we want to make clear that they feel that the harm Anu experienced at the hands of the police, killed him.

ALT The Casey Review has evidenced the culture of racism, misogyny, homophobia and violence that defines the internal culture at the London Met. We remind you that those findings can be applied to forces across the UK. We ask that you take time to read the full statement. Learn about who Anu was, the mistreatment at West Yorkshire Police that led to his tragic death, and the negligence by Greater Manchester Police that followed. We also note that a University is complicit here, shedding more light on the harm of police-education partnerships.

ALT The Independent Office for Police Conduct has already determined that the family's complaint against West Yorkshire Police is to be investigated by the force itself. That is not good enough. The family's key demand at this stage is for an independent investigation by the IOPC. Please read our full statement.
