‘China’s gaokao factories and America’s college-industrial complex are not accidents. They are the logical outcome of a global system that has mistaken education for investment and human life for capital.’ My essay in the London Review of Books: lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v48/n02/…
"If Hollywood’s summer blockbuster ‘The Odyssey’ is indicative of a US empire that may be losing its grip, ‘Once Upon a Time’ reflects a China that’s imagining a more expansive international role for itself.” My @LRB review of Once Upon a Time in the Middle East in the Middle East, now in theaters [spoiler alert]: lrb.co.uk/blog/2026/october/…

Disappointed but not surprised to hear about #Latvia's repressive move against Russian emigre journalist @leonidragozin who, by the way, spends most of his time writing travel journals for @lonelyplanet. As others have said, including my chum @bneeditor he is the most mild-mannered person and absolutely not in the sway of the Russian state.
His view reflects that of many young Russian liberals who dislike Putin's policies but nonetheless find the Russophobia in Europe hysterical and grotesque. In that regard he is a digital nomad, stateless, soon, in more ways than one.
Barring him from Latvia is simply childish and performative on the part of the authorities, but will cause short-medium term distress and disruption to Leonid and his partner, who will need to seek a new place to live.
It reflects an ongoing and insidious clampdown on free speech in Europe. it isn't just because Leonid bears the stain of being a hated Russian, but that he says things that people in Riga, Brussels, London and elsewhere don't want to hear.
Europe is now a reincarnated Frankenstein USSR.

I personally know Leonid Ragozin and shared a newsroom with him in the 2000s. I may not agree with everything he says, but it’s crazy and shameful to portray him as a Kremlin propagandist. To me, this is a direct assault on freedom of speech.

Even though China's astoundingly poor footballing record is pretty well known, I am occasionally amazed by just how bad the national team is

"Technology diffusion should therefore be China’s core offer. This is the genuinely irreplaceable thing China brings to the table: not moral authority, but a recipe that has made decarbonization affordable for the first time. The task is to convert this from a trade grievance into a global public good: to transfer manufacturing prowess and not just products, and to accept, as one Chinese scholar told us bluntly, that “you cannot take such a big share of the market; everyone must have a fair share of the pie.”"

There is no grand strategy for planetary decarbonization, no long game to lead the collective struggle. What China has instead is something that may ultimately matter more: a sprawl of largely uncoordinated actors each pursuing its own passions and interest.

ANNOUNCING ISSUE #4: CHINA
With respect to climate and the environment, China is observed, understood and debated in often-conflicting terms: as the world leader on green tech and as a coal-clouded bogeyman.
