Canonical is funding a PhD project to automate C-to-Rust translation for Ubuntu Linux. The project is a three-year collaboration with the University of Bristol and UK Research and Innovation. Note that it is not a vibe-coded "convert my C code to Rust. Don't make mistake" kind of experiment. It is a four-stage pipeline: break the codebase into dependency-aware chunks, translate using models trained on real C-to-Rust conversions, validate with fuzzing and formal equivalence checks, then use symbolic program-repair to fix discrepancies automatically. The test subjects are AppArmor and snap-confine. Security-critical components that ship in every Ubuntu installation. Interesting choice actually... picking hard targets from the start. Auto-translating a utility library is one thing, doing it for critical components shows determination. This is still a research project, though. Three years is a long time and a PhD dissertation is not necessarily production software. But if the validation pipeline holds up, this could become a trend for automating C into Rust for more Linux projects (at least for Ubuntu).
