A Berkeley researcher told his coding agent to cut its own cost and running time by 99%. It ran overnight, watching its own logs, editing its own code, rerunning until metrics dropped. Result: 98% cost cut, 75% faster. The 9 changes it made, from model switching to prompt compression to tool fixes, are obvious in hindsight. But no human wrote them.
