Missouri residents had no way to know how many people died in state prisons — until now. Briefly back on X to share this latest installment in @MarshallProj's death-in-custody coverage + a few thoughts from my reporting on MO's flawed records system🧵👇🏾 themarshallproject.org/2025/…

Dr. Roger Mitchell put it succinctly: the lack of year-end death data is “extremely concerning.” “You need the number, and not just the number,” he said. "Not just to hold people accountable for things that weren't done correctly, but so that if things can improve — we improve.”

🧵ends here -with my P.S. that Missouri's Department of Public Safety apparently does collect prison deaths from @MoCorrections, but DPS (1) closed that data to the public, and (2) “does not review, compile, evaluate or analyze the submitted reports.” themarshallproject.org/2025/…

Shamari Jackson, a St. Louis mortician, came to the job after gun violence took her boyfriend’s life. In her work, she’s compassionately cared for the bodies of friends and classmates, as well as strangers [@itsivyscott @MarshallProj] themarshallproject.org/2025/…

No words to describe how proud I am to see this project brought to life. So much time spent with families of homicide victims, listening to their stories. To see this reporting turned into a literal work of art is such a gift. Look, listen + learn below👇🏾 themarshallproject.org/2025/…

I no longer work @BostonGlobe so I can say this w/o fear of immediate retribution but the Globe’s treatment of its audio team, since its attempt to expand, is unconscionable. Hiring reporters & encouraging them to relocate, only to swiftly dissolve the team, is flatly cruel🧵

@BostonGlobe This industry is far from stable right now but reporters deserve, at least, to be treated like people. Shuffling them around to any open position (including ones you Know are only temporary), and leaving them in a jobless limbo cannot be the best you can do. 🧵(2/3)

And censoring your staff is outrageous. This is exactly the behavior we loudly condemn in other institutions. It is not acceptable in a newsroom. @BostonGlobe is supposed to be a place people are proud to work, or have worked. I implore you not to fail those who keep you going.
