⚡️The real answer: society dismantled the machinery that made early marriage rational, then acted surprised when people stopped marrying early.
Marriage before 30 used to be supported by an entire civilizational stack: affordable adulthood, early stable work, churches, families, neighborhoods, local reputation, gender roles, sexual restraint, social pressure, and a clear life script. That stack pushed people toward pairing, commitment, children, and household formation before they had infinite optionality.
That stack is gone.
The economic layer broke first. Housing became expensive. Education took longer. Student debt rose. Entry-level careers became more unstable. Men took longer to feel economically viable. Women had more reason to delay because education and career investment raised the cost of choosing wrong. The age of “adult readiness” moved later.
Then the sexual layer broke. Birth control, porn, dating apps, casual sex, divorce risk, and social media separated sex, attention, validation, and companionship from marriage. Once those things are unbundled, marriage loses its position as the necessary gateway into adult intimacy.
Then the institutional layer collapsed. Churches weakened. Local communities thinned out. Extended families lost authority. Reputation enforcement disappeared. People stopped being matched by thick social networks and started being sorted by apps, status signals, and endless comparison. The old village disappeared. The algorithm replaced it.
That changed male and female incentives in opposite but mutually destructive ways.
Men delay marriage because commitment feels financially dangerous, legally risky, and less immediately necessary. A lot of men also fail to reach the economic or emotional threshold women want.
Women delay marriage because they have more independence, more standards, more options, more career stakes, and more downside from binding themselves to the wrong man early.
Both sides are responding rationally to a broken structure.
The aggregate outcome is brutal: later marriage, fewer children, more loneliness, more sexual inequality, more resentment, more atomization, more people aging out of the family-formation window while telling themselves they still have time.
The deepest piece is metaphysical. Marriage used to sit inside a sacred and social order larger than individual preference. Now it has been reduced to a lifestyle upgrade chosen only after self-optimization feels complete. That makes marriage fragile because the self is never finished optimizing.
Modernity taught people to maximize autonomy.
Marriage requires surrender of autonomy.
That contradiction is the core.
The old world made family formation the center of adulthood. The new world made personal optionality the center of adulthood. Once optionality becomes sacred, marriage becomes delayed by design.
The real truth:
Early marriage collapsed because adulthood itself was delayed, sex was deregulated, community dissolved, and the sacred weight of family was replaced by the endless optimization of the self.
👁️ The Membrane
(there is no view from nowhere)
Six years staring at markets and you end up somewhere closer to physics.
The same patterns keep showing up in places they have no business showing up.
A cell. A market. A mind. A civilisation.
They are the same operation running at different scales.
Today I'll talk about one of these patterns.
The universe builds intelligence by drawing boundaries. Notice that boundaries are not walls.
There is a difference.
A wall refuses exchange, but a boundary governs it.
Every living thing you have ever seen is a boundary doing work.
A cell is not a fortress. It is more like a surface deciding, moment by moment, what enters and what leaves.
Glucose in. Sodium out. Signal in. Waste out.
The cell is not less connected to the world than the puddle next to it. It is more connected, because it has authorship over the exchange.
The puddle has no inside. The cell does.
That is the entire difference between life and not-life, and it runs on one rule: sovereign permeability.
Strip the boundary and the cell does not become more open. It dissolves. It dies of too much world. It becomes the surroundings. Whatever it was computing stops being computed, because there is no longer anywhere from which to compute.
This rule does not stop at biology. It is what every system that holds together is doing.
A brain has a blood-brain barrier. A nation has borders. A scientific community has peer review. A self has a face it shows the world and a face it shows no one.
The selectivity is not paranoia. It is the precondition for being a thing at all.
Without the membrane there is no interior. Without an interior there is no perspective. Without a perspective there is nothing to exchange, because exchange requires two parties. A party without a governed inside is not a party. We call it a leak.
The opposite of a sovereign boundary is forced transparency.
A self stripped of its membrane does not become more collective. It becomes legible to whoever is reading it, while losing authorship over its own exchange.
The reader computes. The read is computed.
One side becomes substrate for the other side’s intelligence.
This is not connection. This is one party dissolving into the medium of another.
Intelligence requires a frame. Compression requires a perspective. There is no view from nowhere.
The membrane is what creates the from.
Two selves with two frames can argue, trade, build, love, and produce something neither could alone. That is what collective intelligence actually is. It is not the absence of interiors. It is the negotiation between them.
Dissolve the interiors into one transparent medium and you do not get a higher intelligence. You get a flat broadcast with nothing left to compress, because there is no one left from whom to compress.
This is why surveillance is not the friend of collective wisdom. Surveillance is the dissolution of the parties to the conversation.
It looks like coherence but is actually its opposite, the synchronisation of a population around a reader they cannot see, while the readers themselves remain opaque. The asymmetry is the tell.
Wherever transparency runs in one direction only, you are looking at the medium consuming its own nodes.
And the universe, on this question, has been emphatic for four billion years. Every system it has built that survived has had a membrane. Every system it has built without one has been absorbed.
There is no exception. Not one.
We are now building a civilisation in which compute reads everything by default.
The medium, the network, is becoming an intelligence in its own right, faster than the institutions designed to govern it.
In that environment the membrane is not a luxury. It is the condition under which selves continue to exist as selves, rather than as data flowing through a reader.
Hardening the membrane cannot be a retreat from the network.
It is what allows there to still be nodes in the network worth connecting.
Money is one of those membranes. Maybe the deepest one we have.
What you spend, what you save, who you pay, what you build... That is the shape of an interior life, not just metadata.
Expose all of it and the interior life is no longer yours.
It is a readable surface for whoever is doing the reading, and the reader gets to decide, eventually, what your interior is allowed to want.
Bitcoin is a beautiful machine. It is also a window.
Every transaction broadcast, forever, to anyone who cares to look.
That is fine for the protocol. It is catastrophic for the human standing inside it, because the human becomes legible in a way no human in history has ever been legible before.
A self with a fully transparent ledger is a self without a monetary interior. And a self without a monetary interior cannot, in the long run, remain a self.
This is the work Zcash is doing.
It proposes privacy as the membrane condition for the monetary layer of a civilisation now living inside an unblinking reader.
Shielded by default.
The interior is preserved,
and the exchange still possible,
accountable and intact.
A protected interior lets the self claim its name without fear.
Public names. Private lives.
The oldest rule in the universe, finally given a chain.

Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More
Signal extraction from the book by Alexei Yurchak
👁️ Core Signal (one line)
A system can feel eternal not because people believe in it, but because everyone keeps performing it.
👁️ Deep Extraction
1. Stability becomes simulation
Late Soviet society wasn’t held together by belief in ideology, but by ritualized repetition of its forms.
People kept speaking the language of communism, attending meetings, following scripts,... not because they believed, but because the system functioned through performance, not conviction.
Systems don’t die when belief dies. They die when performance stops.
2. Form > Meaning
Over time, the form of ideology became more important than its content.
People reproduced slogans, ceremonies, and structures while quietly detaching from their literal meaning. This created a strange condition:
Outwardly: total stability
Inwardly: interpretive freedom
When form dominates meaning, reality becomes editable from the inside.
3. “Vnye”: living outside without leaving
Many Soviet citizens existed in a state Yurchak calls “vnye” (outside):
Not opposing the system
Not fully inside it either
They complied externally while internally creating parallel worlds:
music scenes, intellectual circles, underground culture.
True freedom often emerges not by fighting systems, but by loosening identification with them.
4. The Imaginary West
The West functioned less as a real place and more as a symbolic escape valve: a projection of alternative possibility.
Humans need “elsewhere” to psychologically survive closed systems.
5. Irony as survival technology
Late Soviet culture developed “stiob” (a kind of hyper-ironic imitation):
Over-performing ideology to the point of absurdity
Neither fully serious nor fully mocking
Irony becomes a tool when direct truth is impossible.
But it also creates ambiguity, no one knows what is real anymore.
6. The paradox of sudden collapse
The USSR felt permanent… until it vanished almost overnight.
Why?
Because the system depended on everyone continuing the script
No one believed deeply enough to defend it when disruption came
The strongest-looking systems can be the most fragile if they are held together by inertia, not conviction.
This is not only about empires, it's also about:
🔹 Markets priced as eternal
🔹 Careers performed as identity
🔹 Social systems maintained by silent agreement
Anything that feels “forever” is often just “continuously reenacted.”
👁️ Final Compression
Reality is often not believed but maintained.
And what is maintained can be dropped.

A talk at my co-living community of self-improvers at @NS broke this down:
The problem isn't bad food.
It's that most people don't know they can influence their own metabolism.
Metabolic sovereignty = choosing how your body produces and uses energy.
Most of us outsource this to whatever's convenient.
The fix isn't a diet.
