James Gandolfini went to Rome with his 13-year-old son to connect with the family history behind his Italian roots. Neither of them could have known how the trip would end. After a day of sightseeing, Gandolfini fell ill in his hotel room. His son alerted the staff, and emergency help was called. A family trip that was supposed to create lasting memories became a moment no child should have to face. There is something especially painful about the ordinary details surrounding a loss like this. No dramatic farewell, no opportunity to prepare. Just a father and son travelling together, with life continuing as usual until it suddenly doesn't. Gandolfini gave audiences a character who seemed almost impossible to separate from the man playing him. But beyond the screen, he was a father whose most important role had nothing to do with fame.
