My husband had a biopsy for cancer and no call with results. After 2 wks passed I called the doctor's office and was put on a long hold. Another doctor got on the phone and said, "Somebody should have called you. Your doctor is on vacation but I didn't want you to have to wait any longer so I'll tell you: it's cancer."
I say, "Okay what's the next step?"
He says, "Well I'm not his doctor but we don't treat that."
I say, "Okay, can you refer me to someone who can help us figure out what steps are next?"
He says, "You just have to get on the phone. Try calling Mayo."
I say, "Can you post the results to the portal because I know anybody I call will ask and want to see the pathology?"
He says, "Just write this down. Do you have a pen? Squamous cell inside the nose."
I say, "Ok but when do you think you can have that posted to the portal or email me," (knowing that nobody will see my husband without that report).
He says, "I told you what it is, that's all you need."
I hang up. I call Mayo. They say, "We can't talk about it until you send the pathology report." I try to explain I don't have it yet but I know what it is. Anyway, they say, they are on a waiting list that's so long they aren't even taking new names. Call back in 6 months and see if they're taking names again.
This was the beginning, and typical of the next 4 years in our health system.
I know you all have similar stories. I wish we could solve these problems for all!
Telling an eighty-year-old woman to "check the portal" for serious biopsy results is cruelty disguised as digital efficiency.
My 82-year-old aunt had a lung biopsy done two weeks ago.
The doctor told her they’d have the pathology report ready within five business days.
Friday afternoon rolled around. No call.
She dialed the clinic’s main desk, her voice shaking with anxiety.
The receptionist cut her off before she could finish explaining:
“Doctor doesn’t give results over the phone anymore. All lab findings are automatically released to your MyChart patient portal.”
My aunt said, “Sweetheart, I don’t have a computer. I have a landline on my kitchen wall. Can the doctor just tell me if I have cancer?”
The receptionist sighed into the receiver:
“It’s hospital network policy. We can’t bypass the portal. You’ll have to have a family member create an account and view the file.”
My aunt spent an entire seventy-two-hour weekend sitting in her recliner, gripping her reading glasses, convinced she was dying.
I drove out to her house on Monday morning, set up a profile on my laptop, and pulled up the records.
The result was benign.
The pathology report had been uploaded four days earlier.
A doctor spent three minutes clicking an upload button, and an elderly woman endured four days of sheer psychological terror because the hospital decided a phone call was too expensive.
Since when did delivering medical news become a self-service task?

There was a court hearing last week for Jose Medina, the illegal Venezuelan with a criminal record who murdered Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman in cold blood last March.
ZERO coverage in Chicago media. This horrific tragedy was instantly memoryholed by reporters and politicians once they realized who had killed Sheridan.
Shameful levels of heartlessness and dereliction of duty by all who continue to ignore this story.
Her heartbroken mom and dad haven’t been interviewed by a single Chicago news station or reporter. But they attend every hearing in person.

Reflections on Katie: What Grief Taught Me About Curiosity
Losing Katie changed more than my life. It changed the way I see the world.
Grief made me ask questions I never expected to ask.
Why do some tragedies receive enormous attention while others disappear?
Why are some victims amplified while others are treated as inconvenient?
Why can people defend decisions even when the consequences are painful, sometimes devastating, to innocent people?
Intentions matter. But intentions are not outcomes.
Those entrusted with authority have a responsibility to look at the entire ledger: What did we intend? What actually happened? Who benefited? Who suffered? Who was protected? Who was left vulnerable? What did we get wrong? And what needs to change?
Too often, the last question is the one we refuse to ask.
I also wrestle with something deeper: why are our hearts so susceptible to deception? Why can we become so invested in a narrative that we stop seeing the suffering that doesn't fit it?
Grief has made reflection unavoidable for me. It has made me unwilling to accept that a conviction, a sentence or a convenient explanation means every question has been answered.
And Scripture has given me a place to wrestle with that. Job questioned. The Psalms cried out. Faith did not require pretending to understand.
But I am still asking. Still listening. Still trying to see the entire ledger. Still trying to walk the narrow path between truth and hatred, justice and vengeance, compassion and blindness.
Maybe that is what grief taught me about curiosity:
Sometimes asking why is an act of love.
I wrote about that journey here:

Activist juries in DC continue to let criminals off the hook as part of the anti-Trump resistance--including two recent mistrials for MS-13 gang leaders.
Jurors openly declare their intention on day one of deliberations to sabotage guilty verdicts in cases brought by DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro. Check this out:

Three years ago this month, Joe Biden’s handpicked AG’s handpicked special counsel brought a THIRD federal criminal indictment against President Trump. (Then asked for gag orders on him a year before the election.)
That came on top of thousands of federal criminals charges against his supporters. And wide ranging investigations into Trump associates including his own attorneys.
Joe Biden’s DOJ hauled dozens of individuals including VP Mike Pence before DC grand juries in search of crimes.
We now know 200+ MAGA-tied organizations and donors and influencers were also under DOJ investigation.
And Jack Smith—working under the authority of Merrick Garland—found a back door way to obtain text messages of 40+ Republican members of Congress.
Not a single member of the media ever confronted Merrick Garland about doing the bidding of Joe Biden. To the contrary, the media lamented that Garland then Jack Smith weren’t working fast enough to put Trump in prison before the 2024 election.
No questions about the DOJ’s “independence” from the White House—despite evidence disclosed in the documents case in 2024 that prosecutors were in communication with Biden’s top White House attorneys—including at least two visits to the Biden White House prior to the indictments.
