From Jesuit High School in Sacramento to Stanford and Mexico's national team, basketball taught me how to compete and find a way. Now I'm the founder of HiaFan, a fan engagement platform bringing sports fans together across 90+ countries. Starting today, I'm sharing my journey as a founder and athlete here on X. Excited to keep building HiaFan alongside my co-founder @NdutuYahya

When I was young and building confidence as an athlete, I’d often repeat in my head before the game: “Be aggressive. Be aggressive. Be aggressive” Sometimes this landed me on the bench. But more often than not, good things happened. I’d force turnovers, create shots for myself, or even better my teammates. By attacking relentlessly, I got more opportunity to attack. And then later learned when to go slow. Play at varied paces. It looks slightly different off the court, but a warrior-like aggressiveness is surely the best way to compete.
Startups should staff themselves with Warriors, and root out Guardians or Caretakers. Bad performance is easy to spot. Mediocre performance and complacency is harder to spot. Mediocre performers will never achieve greatness. They will always be Guardians at best. Warriors become complacent when high performance shifts to autopilot. Metrics may still look strong, but the commitment is no longer the same, and the changes in behavior are subtle. Meeting goals doesn’t mean someone isn’t complacent. Complacent Warriors lose the will to fight and become Guardians themselves. Startups operate in a highly competitive environment. You are battling both incumbents and other startups, so you need to recruit, retain, and reward Warriors. Send the Guardians and Caretakers to your competitors.

I went through recruiting as a 4-5 star ⭐️🏀 Now that I'm a founder, venture feels really familiar. What I've noticed with startups is nobody wants to offer first (obviously there are outliers). Then one investor writes a check and suddenly everyone's calling. Same thing happens when that first school offers you. The offers begin to feel like a huge accomplishment, but they're only the beginning. The difficult part is finding/choosing the right one. Two schools can offer you and only one of them is actually right for you. Pretty sure this is true for investors too, fit matters!!!

I often experience analysis paralysis. I think it stems from my creativity, perfectionism and constant brainstorming. This obviously is a negative, and I experienced this in basketball🏀 but “finishing” a pitch deck may be the most heightened analysis paralysis I’ve ever had 🤣
