This psychiatrist just admitted what really happens to kids with autism who are “nuked with psychiatric drugs.” Their parents plead with doctors: “What else can we do?” “I’m killing my child … ” Bookmark this. Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring: “I get a lot of patients coming to me with autism who are essentially just nuked with psychiatric drugs.” “Big doses of mood stabilizers and antipsychotics.” “Over time, the kids gain weight.” “They develop side effects.” “They develop tardive dyskinesia.” “They start having movement disorders.” “They’re developing cardiovascular disease.” “They’re metabolically unhealthy.” “I want to remove the medications, but I have nothing to replace it with.” “The model I trained with was send them to speech therapy and OT and give them Risperdal.” “You just have to tell the parents … you have to live with it.” Honey Rinicella: “How hopeless … ” Dr. Witt-Doerring: “It’s heartbreaking for the families.” “There’s so many moms out there and fathers who are ready to do pretty much anything for their children.” “You could have a kid who has autism and they’ve been on psychiatric medications for a long time.” “And they’re even sicker than they were before.” “They’re more irritable.” “They’re more aggressive.” “Many doctors will just keep on stacking meds.” “The original problems keep on getting worse.” “And now they have all these drug-induced side effects.” Rinicella: “The biggest tragedy is … a lot of these children can’t communicate.” “Medicine typically just throws them on something that might be internally destroying them.” “And they have no way of communicating.” “The child never really gets to the root of why the behavior existed in the first place.” @MedMAPS @Honey_MedMAPS @DrJosefWD

How many US children have profound autism? CDC data shows identification rose from 1 in 217 (2016) to 1 in 139 (2022). Yet, 24-hour supervision data is missing. Read more: profoundautism.org/about-us/…

There is a great team in @Education_Ire trying to make summer programme work in special schools and am very pleased to see the increase in budget to €92m to provide for this much needed support @1Hildegarde @mmoynihantd

Stepping stones Special school in maynooth told families that, due to strike action, students will not be able to attend school daily & will have access on a rotational basis. Again the most vulnerable children are being screwed over @1Hildegarde @mmoynihantd @GarNob

For children who rely on routine, consistency and support, this is hugely disruptive. Why are they always the ones paying the price? @Education_Ire @forsa_union_ie @IPPN_Education @paulcrone_napd @rtenews @VirginMediaNews @Independent_ie

Agree 100% that HIQA style inspections are needed urgently in special schools as massive safeguarding gaps exist and students are expelled rather than excelling @MichealMartinTD @1Hildegarde @mmoynihantd @Education_Ire @OCO_ireland @ncseirl @IPPN_Education

Body found in search for three-year-old Noah Woods theguardian.com/uk-news/2026… An awful outcome. The deadly triad that is autism, wandering and drowning takes another life. Really angry that the 'search water first' message has not been pushed more here in the UK.

Not all staff in all schools are committed. @MiriamOCal @mmoynihantd Miriam they are SAFER in mainstream. look at the restraint figures. Putting mainstream teachers in these schools is pointless. Need purposely trained special ed staff but don't have in Ireland @1Hildegarde

Parents of children at Community Special Schools (CSSs) in Ireland report feeling abandoned due to severe gaps in staffing, shortened school days, and a critical lack of therapeutic supports. At Belmayne CSS in Dublin, a delayed opening and reduced hours caused distress, regression, and incidents where vulnerable children were injured due to insufficient Special Needs Assistants (SNAs). Similar issues persist at older facilities like Carrigaline CSS in Cork, where a scarcity of speech, language, and occupational therapists has led to student dysregulation, physical restraints, and repeated suspensions for behaviors tied directly to their disabilities. Experts like Dr. Laura Gormley argue that establishing school places without having essential supports ready from the outset violates best practice, pointing to a systemic breakdown in special education provision. In response, the Department of Education acknowledged the operational challenges, stating that it is currently expanding the Community Special School model and building a new dedicated therapy service to gradually address these longstanding resource shortages. This issue in a report by Oonagh Smyth and airing on Prime Time tonight at 9:35pm on RTÉ One. #Belmayne #Carrigaline #CommunitySpecialSchools #CSS #SNAs #Staffing #Disability #PrimeTime rte.ie/news/primetime/2026/0…

According to the CDC, 26.7% of 8-year-olds with autism have profound autism. That's more than 1 in 4. They face complex, often invisible challenges that demand real solutions, for them and for the caregivers who support them every day. Learn more: profoundautism.org/advancing…

Only 6% of autism studies include people with profound autism. Those needing lifetime, 24/7 care can and should be included in research. Their health and quality of life matter. Researchers, caregivers, and physicians: help us change this. profoundautism.org/advancing…
