Panel Discussion on India Book Market Report 2026–2030 Held at the Bharat/India Stage
A panel discussion on the "India Book Market Report 2026–2030", recently brought out by The Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP) and NielsenIQ Book Data, was organised at the Bharat/India Stage on 7 October 2026.
The panellists were Shri Vikrant Mathur, Executive Director, NielsenIQ Book Data, and Shri Nilesh Dhankani, Founder and CEO, Quarterfold Printabilities. The session was moderated by Shri Pranav Gupta, Vice President, FIP.
During the session, the speakers discussed the findings of the Report, which projects that India's book publishing market will reach US$ 21 billion by 2030-31. They remarked that the Report would help develop a better ecosystem for the Indian publishing industry. It would also help Indian publishers strengthen their business, not only in India but also in foreign countries, discover new avenues in publishing and look into their shortcomings. The panelists also talked about the challenges publishers face at different phases, including production, marketing and sales of books, and reaching the target readers.
The discussion also looked at changing trends within Indian publishing. Non-fiction is declining, while fiction and children's books are growing very quickly. The speakers also talked about the influence of movies and streaming platforms, and the way different platforms are creating new opportunities for authors and publishers. AI was mentioned as another major opportunity for the publishing industry. At the same time, many Indian publishing houses are relatively small, which means there is still significant potential for growth. One important message was that authors and publishers need to understand their readers and their needs before creating and publishing content. India's rapidly developing market therefore offers many opportunities for global publishers to work with, and learn from, the Indian publishing industry.
