Robotic-assisted cochlear implant electrode insertion may improve long-term hearing preservation. In this study, robotic-assisted insertion was associated with significantly lower rates of delayed-onset hearing loss and an NNT of 4. Could robotics become the next step in atraumatic cochlear implantation?

Earlier this year, the Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery began offering robotic-assisted cochlear implantation at UPMC Mercy and UPMC Shadyside.
While the idea of a robot operating in such a delicate area may seem surprising, the iotaMotion robotic system is actually less invasive and more beneficial, with no additional cost to the patient.
