How much of your happiness have you put on hold until something—or someone—changes? ⠀ “I’ll be happier when business picks up.” ⠀ “When the pressure eases.” ⠀ “When they finally appreciate everything I do.” ⠀ And while we wait, another week becomes another year. ⠀ In this clip from A New Direction, Rich Harris, author of “Life Plan: Live By Design, Not Default,” challenges us to examine where we’re investing our attention. ⠀ The circumstances we wish were different? ⠀ Or the choices we can make today? ⠀ Rich explores the role of intention in happiness. He describes it as our “double-sided battle axe”—something powerful we can put to use when life feels outside our control. ⠀ That image gets your attention. But the everyday application is where this becomes personal. ⠀ You can spend the evening replaying what someone said—or make time for a conversation with someone you love. ⠀ You can keep saying your priorities matter—or give them a place on your calendar. ⠀ You can wait for a less demanding season—or set one boundary this week. ⠀ Those choices won’t erase every difficulty. They can give you somewhere meaningful to begin. ⠀ For leaders and business owners, this question deserves an honest answer: ⠀ Are you as intentional about the life you’re living as you are about the business you’re building? ⠀ You plan for revenue. You review performance. You set goals. ⠀ What’s your plan for the relationships, experiences, and daily habits that make success worth having? ⠀ Watch this clip. Then ask yourself: What is one choice I can make today that supports the life I keep saying I want? ⠀ 🎧 Listen to the Full Episode Now: 🔗 Listen Here: jizso.net/and403 🍏 iTunes: ANDitunes.com 🎧 Spotify: ANDspotify.com 📺 YouTube: ANDyoutube.com 🎵 Amazon Music: ANDamazon.com 🧡 iHeart: ANDiheart.com 🔊 Pandora: ANDpandora.com 📻 TuneIn: ANDtunein.com 🎙️ On the go? Have you ever made a decision in seconds—and spent weeks wishing you could take it back? ⠀ The email you sent while frustrated. The assumption you made about an employee. The “yes” you gave before considering what it would cost you. ⠀ When people depend on you, pausing can feel uncomfortable. You’re supposed to have the answer. Keep things moving. Be decisive. ⠀ But what happens when moving faster keeps you repeating the same mistake? ⠀ In this clip from A New Direction, Rich Harris, author of “Life Plan: Live By Design, Not Default,” compares life to a series of escape rooms. ⠀ You move quickly. Look for clues. Try solutions. ⠀ Then comes that moment: You realize you may have missed something. ⠀ Getting unstuck requires you to pause, examine your thinking, and then get moving again. ⠀ Rich also describes two familiar coaching messages: “Think!” and “Don’t think!” ⠀ His point? We need to learn how to switch between deliberate thought and instinctive action. ⠀ As a basketball point guard, he would read the defense, organize his team, and then trust himself to execute the play. ⠀ That lesson reaches well beyond the court. ⠀ As leaders, we need to recognize when a situation deserves a closer look—and when we’ve done the thinking and it’s time to act. ⠀ Consider where you are right now: ⠀ • Are you reacting before you understand? • Are you overlooking something because you’re rushing? • Are you still analyzing a decision you’re ready to make? ⠀ The pause can help you see what you missed. The next move puts that insight to work. ⠀ Watch this clip. Where in your life do you need to change gears? ⠀ 🎧 Listen to the Full Episode Now: 🔗 Listen Here: jizso.net/and403 🍏 iTunes: ANDitunes.com 🎧 Spotify: ANDspotify.com 📺 YouTube: ANDyoutube.com 🎵 Amazon Music: ANDamazon.com 🧡 iHeart: ANDiheart.com 🔊 Pandora: ANDpandora.com 📻 TuneIn: ANDtunein.com 🎙️ On the go? If you are what you do, who will you be when you don’t do that anymore? ⠀ I ask my coaching clients this question. Nobody rushes to answer it. ⠀ And I understand why. ⠀ You spend years building a business, leading a team, or becoming the person everyone depends on. Your work gives you purpose. Recognition. A place where you matter. ⠀ Then imagine the calendar going quiet. ⠀ The title belongs to someone else. The calls slow down. Nobody needs your decision before lunch. ⠀ Would you feel free? Or would you wonder where you belong? ⠀ In this clip from A New Direction, Rich Harris, author of “Life Plan: Live By Design, Not Default,” and I explore how deeply our identities become attached to what we do. ⠀ Rich brings up elite athletes who struggle to step away. Their experience raises a question every driven professional can sit with: ⠀ How much of your identity depends on having somewhere to perform? ⠀ Rich’s approach to life planning makes room for multiple areas of life. Because when all our attention goes into one area, the others can quietly disappear. ⠀ Try this: look beyond your work and consider your relationships, health, friendships, and interests. ⠀ Which area leaves you thinking, “I’ve got nothing here”? ⠀ Start there. Give it some time this week. ⠀ You deserve to know yourself beyond the role other people need you to fill. ⠀ 🎧 Listen to the Full Episode Now: 🔗 Listen Here: jizso.net/and403 🍏 iTunes: ANDitunes.com 🎧 Spotify: ANDspotify.com 📺 YouTube: ANDyoutube.com 🎵 Amazon Music: ANDamazon.com 🧡 iHeart: ANDiheart.com 🔊 Pandora: ANDpandora.com 📻 TuneIn: ANDtunein.com ⠀ 🎙️ On the go? Are your team members actually resisting change—or are they grieving who they used to be? Whenever leaders roll out a new AI tool, software platform, or organizational shift, the friction gets written off as stubbornness: People just hate change. In my conversation on A New Direction with Author, Coach, and Combat Veteran Kari Zeller about her book, Re-Placed: Answering the Call of Leadership in the Age of AI, she completely dismantled that assumption. They’re not resisting the change, Kari pointed out. They’re resisting the loss of who they were in the current status quo. Consider the veteran team member or frontline expert: They knew the old system inside and out. They were the go-to person everyone came to for help. They built hard-won workarounds that kept the mission moving. Their competence, professional identity, and relationships were tied to that mastery. When you swap out that system overnight for an algorithm or a new platform, you aren’t merely changing their toolset. You are taking away what they called home—their sense of usefulness, their reputation as an expert, and the stability of their day-to-day relationships. If we treat technology rollouts purely as technical problems, we miss the human reality. Leading in the age of AI requires acknowledging what people feel they are losing before we can ever expect them to embrace what comes next. 🎧 Listen to the Full Episode Now: 🔗 Listen Here: jizso.net/and402 🍏 iTunes: ANDitunes.com 🎧 Spotify: ANDspotify.com 📺 YouTube: ANDyoutube.com 🎵 Amazon Music: ANDamazon.com 🧡 iHeart: ANDiheart.com 🔊 Pandora: ANDpandora.com 📻 TuneIn: ANDtunein.com 🎙️ On the go? Can AI crunch numbers, identify patterns, and drive operational efficiency? Absolutely. The goal isn't to compete with machines on data processing. The goal is to offload analytical heavy-lifting so your leaders have the bandwidth to do what only human beings can do. Don't just implement technology. Create an intelligence strategy that understands, grows, and elevates both. When you look at the rapid rise of AI, is your first instinct to create—or to protect? Right now, many leaders are trapped in what psychologists call a prevention mindset. Instead of asking "What do we have to gain?", they are silently asking "What am I about to lose?" That fear of loss triggers an instinctual reaction: fight, flight, or freeze. Leaders hunker down, build walls around their legacy processes, and ask: “How do I protect what I currently have from AI?” During my interview with Author, Coach, and Combat Veteran Kari Zeller on her book "Re-Placed: Answering the Call of Leadership in the Age of AI," we tackled this exact paralysis. Kari shared an approach every executive needs right now: Grounded Curiosity. It means keeping your feet planted firmly on the ground while remaining radically curious about what is possible. As Kari points out, real leadership doesn't choose between defense and offense—it integrates both: Mitigate the right risks: Separate legitimate operational vulnerabilities from irrational panic. Build a proactive value strategy: Ask how human intelligence and artificial intelligence can work together to achieve what neither could accomplish alone. If you lead from fear, you freeze. If you lead with grounded curiosity, you innovate. If an algorithm can deliver faster answers and analyze data in seconds, what are you actually here for? That uncomfortable question sits at the center of the AI revolution When Author, Coach, and Combat Veteran Kari Zeller joined me on A New Direction to discuss her book, Re-Placed: Answering the Call of Leadership in the Age of AI, we confronted the prefaces warning: The Deeper Crisis. We aren't just dealing with technological disruption. We are dealing with an existential identity crisis For generations, we have misunderstood ourselves. We measured human value through a narrow lens: → Production → Fast answers → Expertise machines So when a non-human intelligence arrives and outpaces our technical output, panic sets in. We mistake our productivity for our humanity. As Kari highlighted, AI can participate in tasks and decisions governed by rules, but it cannot participate in humanity: It does not suffer. It does not belong. It does not take responsibility. It does not care. Care isn't superficial affinity or passive sentiment. Care is the bedrock of how we exist in the world. It is what enables leaders to invent futures rooted in human dignity, foster belonging, and stand accountable for the people they guide. If your leadership identity is built solely on having the quickest answer, you will feel replaced. But if your leadership is grounded in human capacity, purpose, and genuine care, you become irreplaceable. Would you rather watch your team quietly give up on an impossible target, or give them the space to realign and deliver 75% of it? Most leaders don’t lose momentum because their vision is flawed. They lose it because their systems are too brittle to survive reality. Life happens. People get sick, priorities shift, external friction slows delivery, and unexpected roadblocks derail even the most carefully calculated monthly plans. Yet far too many founders and executives operate on an annual "set-it-and-forget-it" loop: Pull someone into the office once a year. Ask, "So, how did we do?" Wonder why targets were missed months ago? When you treat goals as immovable objects, your team only has two options: perfection or defeat. And when defeat feels inevitable, people simply check out. Realignment isn't surrender—it’s strategy. Right beneath your grand vision sits the power to pivot. Checking in quarterly—or even better, twice a month—allows you to spot friction early, recalibrate deadlines, and channel fresh creativity into the next milestone. Stop waiting 365 days to adjust the sail. Give your people the room to realign, and you’ll get execution instead of excuses. 🎧 Listen to the Full Episode Now:🔗 Listen Here: jizso.net/and400 🍏 iTunes: ANDitunes.com 🎧 Spotify: ANDspotify.com 📺 YouTube: ANDyoutube.com 🎵 Amazon Music: ANDamazon.com 🧡 iHeart: ANDiheart.com 🔊 Pandora: ANDpandora.com 📻 TuneIn: ANDtunein.com 🎙️ On the go? What if hitting your revenue targets isn’t enough to keep you truly motivated? When Ron Lieback (author of Time Management Inverted) joined me on A New Direction, we tackled a trap that catches far too many leaders: building solely for the bottom line. Hitting "$5 million in three years" is an ambitious metric, but it isn't a soul-stirring vision. A true Grand Vision can never be about "me, me, me". As Ron shared, the real power comes when your "Why" is tied to serving other people—creating meaningful jobs, helping clients thrive, and genuinely leaving people happier than you found them. When your mission is that deeply human, financial success stops being a grueling chase and becomes the natural secondary outcome of the impact you make. Through his inverted framework, success doesn't start with a frantic to-do list. It begins at the top with that Grand Vision, which then cascades into your monthly goals, weekly tactics, and daily execution. 🎧 Listen to the Full Episode Now: 🔗 Listen Here: jizso.net/and401 🍏 iTunes: ANDitunes.com 🎧 Spotify: ANDspotify.com 📺 YouTube: ANDyoutube.com 🎵 Amazon Music: ANDamazon.com 🧡 iHeart: ANDiheart.com 🔊 Pandora: ANDpandora.com 📻 TuneIn: ANDtunein.com 🎙️ On the go? Are you building a business just to hit a revenue target, or are you building something that actually changes lives? Too many founders burn out chasing arbitrary milestones. Hitting a $5M run rate sounds great on paper, but numbers alone don’t sustain your fire when the pressure mounts. In this episode of A New Direction, Ron Lieback, author of Time Management Inverted, shares a grounding perspective on vision and purpose: Real momentum starts when your "Grand Vision" shifts from "me" to "we." When your primary focus is creating jobs, helping your clients succeed, and making an impact, revenue stops being an elusive chase—it becomes the natural byproduct of the value you put out into the world. From there, you invert the process: Start with your Grand Vision Reverse-engineer it into Monthly Goal Break those down into Weekly Tactics Execute with clarity on your Daily Tasks When your "why" is deeply anchored, the daily grind finally has direction. What if the reason you feel constantly overwhelmed isn't a lack of time, but how you feel about it? We’re conditioned to believe that if we just buy the right planner or master calendar blocking, we'll finally get ahead. But as Ron Lieback, author of Time Management Inverted, pointed out on A New Direction: time is entirely out of our grasp. You cannot manage a ticking clock. The breakthrough comes down to a fundamental psychological truth: Time is a perception—and our emotions control it. When you feel stressed, rushed, or scattered, time slips through your fingers. But when you stop trying to control the clock and intentionally steer your focus, everything shifts. You produce better creative work in a fraction of the time. Stop fighting the minutes.
