Diplomacy
NEW from @nytimes: Xi Jinping announced at a meeting with Trump that China would send two pandas to the Atlanta zoo. Panda diplomacy — literal soft power — is a cornerstone of U.S.-China relations. Zoos pay big money to get the fur balls on loan, which draw millions of fans.

Just in time to phase in the robots, androids and explore the post-humans. We will have a stable population. Just not necessarily of humans.

Why is Google Books removing access to out-of-copyright books that it once hosted as open access? There is a good chance that the mass-deaccession policy of libraries, on the ground that "it's available for free online", will be one of the most stupid acts of modern curatorship.

That’s 30% of pre war level. Not bad at all but comes at the expense of the Navy’s presence.

When I posted this, it was considered right wing — a university had just claimed that saying it constituted a "microaggression." Now it reads as left wing, because it implicitly supports immigration.
I believe the most qualified person should get the job.

Female seclusion is not unique to Afghanistan. When Varun Karekurve-Ramachandra and Gaurav Sood organised a GPS-linked camera to cover the streets of Mumbai and then processed 23,000 observations of visible individuals, they found that... Women accounted for 16% of visible individuals on the streets of Mumbai.
It breaks my heart to see the streets of Afghanistan emptied of women. These Iranian tourists are stunned by their absence from public life. This is not Afghan culture. Afghanistan’s culture is full of women: their voices, faces, art, work, and presence. Erasing women is Taliban culture. A country without women in its streets is not “tradition.” It is gender apartheid.

In contrast, I expect overall progress even in many verifiable domains to choke and slow down because of generative AI. It’s not because AI can’t do many impressive things but because the plausible glut it produces breaks the key filtering mechanisms necessary for progress.

The Federal Reserve Bank of NY published figures showing that American philosophy graduates are more likely to have jobs than their peers who studied computer science. In 2024, 7% of those who had studied computer science were unemployed, against just 5.1% of philosophers.
Some of the lessons that philosophy can offer AI researchers are ancient. One expert says models trained in the Socratic method are less keen on people-pleasing and more willing to pursue the truth economist.com/science-and-te…

Many months ago @harari_yuval declared that the beginning of WW2 was unclear in 1937 or 1939 or 1941. Only in retrospect the 1939 invasion of Poland became the moment that historians defined as the start.

currently reading Claude Shannon's master's thesis i.e the breakthrough that proved Boolean algebra (ones and zeros, true and false) maps directly onto electrical switch relays. I couldn't help but admire how beautiful this 72-page document is, with its hand-drawn diagrams inked over typed text. This foundational doc led to the chips that now run the artificially intelligent systems with the north star of automating research. but, sometimes we oughta recurse back down to the base state where it all began.
