🇷🇺 🇸🇾 Things are moving in Tartus! GENERAL SKOBELEV, AKADEMIK PASHIN, ADMIRAL LEVCHENKO and SPARTA, which were berthed in Tartus until at least 13th September, have now left the Syrian port. SPARTA was reportedly carrying several unidentified ~10 m cylindric objects (if anyone of you have an idea of what they could be?). Its next port of call will be worth watching closely. 21st September imagery also shows what appears to be the ALEKSANDR SHABALIN berthed in the Russian-operated area of Tartus. The landing ship had just escorted the ANASTASIIA and YURIY ARSHENEVSKIY to Tobruk, Libya 🇱🇾 . Will the two cargo ships follow their escort's route? Worth watching. 👀
EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: 🇷🇺🇸🇾 SPARTA loaded something in Tartus ! We thought SPARTA had unloaded equipment in Tartous. It now appears that she also loaded something. HD sat imagery shows an unidentified cargo being loaded onto the vessel. What is Russia trying to move out of Syria? @InsiderGeo

🇷🇺🇱🇾Confirmation of a Russian military equipment shipment being unloaded in Libya Several URAL trucks & tarpaulin-covered vehicles, likely APCs/MRAPs, were seen leaving Tobruk port heading west. A possible destination is Al Khadim, ~3h away, one of 6 Russian-renovated bases.
EXCLUSIVE: 🇷🇺🇱🇾 We have obtained higher-resolution imagery providing a closer look at the Russian military convoy inside Tobruk port. The imagery shows ANASTASIIA and YURIY ARSHENEVSKIY alongside the Ropucha-class landing ship ALEKSANDR SHABALIN. A large number of military and logistics vehicles can be seen in the port area, including multiple Ural-type trucks arranged in rows. The imagery provides a much clearer view of the equipment previously identified aboard the convoy and appears to show the vehicles being unloaded and brought ashore at Tobruk. This is part of our ongoing investigation with @SONARROW_OSINT.

🚨🇷🇺🇱🇾 Russia's new foothold in Tobruk ? The latest imagery shows ANASTASIIA and YURIY ARSHENEVSKIY, escorted by the Ropucha-class ALEKSANDR SHABALIN, at the entrance to Tobruk port. The vessels are reportedly carrying APCs/MRAPs and logistics vehicles, as previously revealed with @InsiderGeo. The deployment could reinforce Russia's growing footprint in Libya, as Ukrainian activity seeks to disrupt Moscow's shadow-fleet. With Russia expanding across six Libyan air bases and reportedly seeking access to Tobruk Port and Air Base, Libya could increasingly serve as Moscow's alternative to Tartus: a new military and logistics hub linking the Mediterranean to the Sahel and Sudan, and potentially opening new avenues for hybrid attacks against Europe from the south.

EXCLUSIVE: In a joint investigation by @InsiderGeo × @SONARROW_OSINT , we identified Russian military equipment being transported toward the eastern Mediterranean aboard the ANASTASIIA and YURIY ARSHENEVSKIY. New imagery shows the vessels now underway in the Mediterranean, while satellite imagery from August 13 and 20 captured the same shipment being prepared and loaded at the Russian naval base in Baltiysk, Kaliningrad Oblast. The imagery shows multiple armored vehicles, including APCs/MRAPs, alongside logistics and support vehicles. The two cargo ships are travelling with the Ropucha-class landing ship ALEKSANDR SHABALIN. The convoy is now sailing south of Sicily and continuing eastward, attracting attention from the Italian military. According to @ItaMilRadar, an Italian Air Force P-72A ATR maritime patrol aircraft was monitoring the Russian naval group south of Sicily on September 10. We will continue tracking the convoy, which will likely reach its final destination in Tobruk, Libya, or Tartus, Syria.

UPDATE: 🇷🇺🇸🇾 After around two months of absence, Russia is back in the Mediterranean, with a Russian naval convoy now arriving at Tartus, Syria. Our team at @SONARROW_OSINT has been tracking the convoy since August 25. The four Russian vessels have travelled from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean and across the region before reaching the Syrian coast. The SPARTA Ro-Ro cargo ship and AKADEMIK PASHIN replenishment oiler are now docked at Tartus. The SPARTA appears to have already unloaded its cargo. The ADMIRAL LEVCHENKO Udaloy-class destroyer and GENERAL SKOBELEV tanker are not currently inside the port. They may be operating offshore, similar to how the ADMIRAL FLOTA KASATONOV has operated around Tartus in recent months. What exactly was delivered to Tartus remains unclear, but the return of a Russian convoy to the Syrian port after months away is significant. So the key questions remain: What did SPARTA bring to Syria, and how long will the Russian vessels remain at Tartus?
🚨🇷🇺🇱🇾 Russian naval convoy is now ~200 km off the Libyan coast. Four Russian vessels are sailing eastward and appear to be closing in on the Libyan coast. Finaly, Tobruk seems to be the most likely destination. 🔸 SPARTA, Ro-Ro cargo ship 🔸 ADMIRAL LEVCHENKO, Udaloy-class destroyer 🔸 GENERAL SKOBELEV, oil products tanker 🔸 AKADEMIK PASHIN, replenishment oiler

🇷🇺🚢 The Russian naval convoy has entered the Mediterranean and is sailing east. The Ropucha-class landing ship ALEKSANDR SHABALIN, accompanied by the cargo vessels ANASTASIIA and YURIY ARSHENEVSKIY, is currently north of Algeria and continuing east. SHABALIN has previously been used to deliver military equipment to Russia's Africa Corps in the Sahel. This time, however, the convoy appears to be heading elsewhere. As with the previous SPARTA convoy, Tobruk 🇱🇾 or Tartus 🇸🇾 remain plausible destinations. Both cargo ships went dark on AIS shortly after Gibraltar, following the same pattern as SPARTA. They were already keeping a low profile before the Ukrainian drone strike on LADY MARIIA. Safe to say, that attack won't exactly encourage them to keep their AIS on in the Mediterranean...
🇷🇺 The Russian naval convoy spotted in the English Channel has now exited the waterway. The Ropucha-class landing ship ALEKSANDR SHABALIN, accompanied by the cargo vessels ANASTASIIA and YURIY ARSHENEVSKIY, departed Kaliningrad and continues sailing south. The convoy’s destination and purpose remain unknown at this time. Perhaps it’s carrying some much-needed military equipment to help Africa Corps with its little difficulties in the Sahel? 🤔

Port Said had been listed as the destination in AIS data before the vessels went dark, while Tartus or Tobruk remain possible destinations.

🚨🇷🇺🇸🇾 Russian convoy has just entered the Mediterranean sea The four vessels have been spotted south of Spain. 🔸 SPARTA cargo ship 🔸 ADMIRAL LEVCHENKO destroyer 🔸 GENERAL SKOBELEV and AKADEMIK PASHIN tankers The convoy switched off its AIS shortly after passing Gibraltar. AKADEMIK PASHIN had already used the same tactic last June, sailing through the Mediterranean with its AIS disabled. After two months of absence from the Mediterranean, Russia is back. The convoy still indicates Port Said as its declared destination, but Tartus appears to be the more likely destination.

The SHABALIN has previously been linked to Russian weapons deliveries, notably to Africa, where it escorted SABETTA and MIKHAIL BRITNEV, two vessels previously tracked by us. 🇩🇰 HDMS FREJA (P521), a Danish patrol vessel, was also observed operating close to the Russian group, apparently monitoring the convoy’s movements. 🇬🇧 The convoy is also being shadowed by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker RFA TIDEFORCE. The destination and purpose of the Russian convoy remain unknown at this time.

Thanks to @bellingcat for citing our work in their latest investigation into the PATRIA, a 🇷🇺 sanctioned vessel linked to the transport of weapons destined for Russian mercenaries. The vessel has been sitting off Lagos since July 21, after months of unusual movements across West African ports. 38 days. And counting 🤯 bellingcat.com/news/africa/2…
🚢 🇷🇺 🇳🇬 The Russian Ro-Ro cargo ship PATRIA (IMO 9159921), sanctioned by the U.S an Canada, has been anchored off Lagos, Nigeria, since 21 July. Given the vessel's documented role in transporting Russian military equipment, its sustained presence in the Gulf of Guinea may reflect Moscow's ambition to establish a longer-term logistical foothold in the region. Could Russia seek to expand its security footprint into Nigeria's counterterrorism landscape while it is already struggling to achieve its objectives in Mali? 👀

🚢🇷🇺 The frigate ADMIRAL KASATONOV and the tanker AKАDEMIK PASHIN are transiting the North Sea, heading for the Baltic. The two vessels left the Mediterranean on June 29, leaving Russia with no naval presence there. They then headed south into the Atlantic, although their objective in the area remained unclear. AKADEMIK PASHIN switched its AIS back on off the coast of Brittany on August 8. So, when should we expect the next deployment to the Mediterranean?

TRITONEA is transiting the English Channel. Back on July 8, together with @SONARROW_OSINT , we documented how TRITONEA (IMO 9243318) had become one of the central vessels in Russia's Mediterranean shadow fleet, carrying out more than 75 ship-to-ship (STS) transfers as part of a structured network used to launder Russian crude oil. Today, that same tanker is transiting one of Europe's busiest maritime corridors. At the same time, the Russian Navy frigate Neustrashimy has now established what appears to be a semi-permanent presence in the English Channel, replacing Admiral Grigorovich. The frigate is operating with an embarked Ka-27 helicopter, giving it the ability to monitor a wider area and provide overwatch for Russian vessels transiting the Channel. A tanker deeply involved in Russia's shadow fleet is now sailing openly through one of Europe's busiest maritime corridors after carrying out dozens of ship-to-ship transfers used to obscure the origin of Russian oil.
