So Black people in Gary, Indiana were not only neglected and left without power for weeks, but they're being killed by the police as well. We’ve seen this before, and it’s infuriating that it’s happening again.
Family and community members in Gary, Indiana are demanding answers after 67-year-old grandfather Kenneth Williams Sr. was shot and killed by police on Friday night while working security at a local transit center.
Police say they were responding to reports of Williams Sr. exhibiting "unusual and erratic behavior." A total of nine officers – six Gary Police and three Lake County Sheriff's deputies – discharged their weapons, and all have been placed on administrative leave.
It comes just three days after power was fully restored to Gary, Lake County’s only majority Black city, following a two-week blackout caused by windstorms on August 11.
No officers were injured in the encounter, and police say an autopsy on Williams Sr.’s body will be completed on Tuesday.

While one majority Black city, Gary Indiana, has been left to endure a weeks-long power outage, another majority Black city, Memphis, TN, has now been told they will be without power for nearly a week. In these Black cities, instead of the National guard being asked to assist, they are stuck being deployed in DC by President Trump as a political ploy in an attempt to show strength.
As working people, when we clock in at work, we’re agreeing to the social contract of paying taxes for the greater public good. So when disasters like what’s going on in Memphis happen, our hard earned tax money will be used to ensure safety.
