To me the biggest risk of AI is brain rot. I have more and more situations like this. Some coworker shares a report on something they did. I read, and find something fishy. I ask about and get no answer. I ask again and I'm told: the agent said that. And no follow up. It's clear form the interaction that they did not read the report they shared. Their brain is not used as it should be. I am not against AI at all (fortunate for something working at NVIDIA). I use AI a lot. But I use it as a tool. I own the result and whenever I see something fishy I ask about its output I force a change if I am not convinced. I wish there was a way to force people to read the AI output they share with others.

You shouldn't trust researchers, engineers, or the people who pioneered neural networks and machine learning when they say AI is dangerous. You should instead trust Ed, who is just a guy. invite him on every podcast. This guy clearly knows more than Geoffrey Hinton.

An anonymous Democratic staffer working on a must win race whined and cried to the press because they heard a few bad words. This is exactly the problem our party has. We can not be the party of scolds and hall monitors going "erm actually you can't say that".

Mathematician Terence Tao: "we have to slow down AI. the pace is insane, and there's no reason to be this fast — no reason at all" It's amazing how willing we are to change everything without any idea what happens afterward These are extremely nonlinear dynamics

Can we stop being retards about AI art as if we only get one or the other? I studied painting for four years, I have a minor in art history. AI is not going to usurp the western canon. It's simultaneously Incredibly interesting that your computer can now paint using python.
omg guys claude can create paintings that already exist 🤯

Rogue OpenAI agents hack Australian govt for private health statistics. OpenAI learns in August, doesn't share with Australian govt until September 10 (!!) OpenAI's voluntary "framework" for sharing model misalignment incidents—is sad and toothless. Self-regulation won't work

i generally try to resist the "us twitter people are ahead of the curve " trope, but stuff like this reminds me how strategically and rhetorically unprepared the ai industry is for the scale and intensity of the crisis of meaning that is fast approaching. maybe my #1 concern
i don't think nearly anyone, myself included, has truly internalized there'll soon be a machine better than us in every single intellectual & physical capacity deep down we all share a feeling that our 'entrepreneurship' or 'taste' or... is special & safe. it isn't. it's over

If you're an employee at OAI—if you knew about the AU govt hack and OpenAI didn't disclose it, then you have a duty to society to share with the press (or at least the Australian govt as a whistleblower lol) Come on guys

IMO the frontier models suffer from Linus Torvalds syndrome "the curse of the gifted" ala lwn.net/2000/0824/a/esr-shar… (where here, the gift is the ability to hold inhuman amounts of context in short access memory)

Tragically, when I first saw the movie “Don’t Look Up” in 2021, it struck a chord with me. I felt viscerally that humans would find ourselves in a comparable place one day - and soon. If you haven’t seen the movie, I’d recommend it. A quick recap: Humans were explicitly warned that a comet that could destroy Earth was heading rapidly toward us. And instead of doing anything to stop it, the president, elected leaders and billionaire CEOs just spewed some bullshit about all the “jobs the comet would create.” The media treated the comet as casual entertainment. The public was split and the entire thing gets politicized. The movie ends with nearly all of human life wiped out. Just about a year ago I had the opportunity to join a bipartisan freshman class breakfast with Sam Altman. I was shocked when he said to us, “in 18 months, I’ll trust artificial superintelligence to run my company better than I can.” I regret I didn’t engage more on this issue immediately. Now here we are - it’s 2026 and engineers at the world’s leading AI companies are telling us that there is a >10% chance that artificial intelligence could kill all humans. They’re not mincing their words in the slightest. Not because of present day AI capabilities, but because it is evolving so exponentially that we could be in a doomsday scenario in a year. One year. This is fucking serious. We need to halt new advanced AI development. We need guardrails, transparency and emergency powers. We need more employees at these companies to speak out publicly, loudly and fearlessly until everyone is forced to listen. We need the media to be covering this 24/7 until elected officials are forced to act. We need the Trump Administration to treat this with the urgency it deserves. We need the ability to shut an AI model off if there’s a credible threat to human life. The list goes on - and we don’t even know what the full list entails because this is all happening so fast. That’s why we need urgent, bipartisan public hearings and committees dedicated to developing and enacting solutions expeditiously. This isn’t partisan. Let’s stop with the bullshit and come together for the sake of our shared humanity. I’m a 34-year-old Democratic Congresswoman, and I’d like to live to see my late 30s. I know my Republican colleagues want the same for themselves and their loved ones. None of us can afford to be complacent about this any longer.
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.
