ICYMI - something to watch during the weekend :)
youtu.be/fZZf0215jcs?si=sWjy… I've spent the past five-ish months transcribing and dissecting Raja-sir's symphony, and now I have an 84-minute video for you! By far my most ambitious analysis till date and I am very nervous putting it out. Just my small tribute to a masterpiece!!

There are two reasons for my emotional reaction: I) Ilaiyaraaja’s music itself 2) your art of presenting the analysis in audiovisual medium. As someone who has spent hundreds of hours making analytical videos about musical experiences, I know how laborious an endeavour this is. I have cried myself to sleep trying to crack concepts audiovisually. You could have written this as an analytical essay, but who has the time to read long essays these days. You could have recorded this as an audio podcast, but you didn’t; it is not as adequate a form as video to showcase Ilaiyaraaja’s brilliance in all its glory. If someone only hears this video, playing it in the background while doing something else, they would miss all the analytical details you offer in terms of graphics and text on screen. Then, there is the narrative strategy and the task of splitting the 17-minute piece into manageable and musically-contained segments on which you could speak about. Your segmentation is spot on. Holding the tension, just as music holds the tension, before the release arrives. You use all the technical terminologies without worrying about alienating those who are not familiar with them, but you also provide a clear and precise explanation about each term that anyone who is musically curious would be able to understand. Then there is the art of delivering the written script in front of a camera; the pace is even, your tone conversational, with pauses and emphasis at right places. We are able to follow you throughout without any confusion. And there is so much more. Ilaiyaraaja’s team created plenty of promotional materials (interviews, teasers, concerts, etc.) for the symphony, but this is the best promotional media one could create for a work such as this. I can’t wait for your analysis of the second movement, but take your time. No rush.

Undoubtedly, the most erudite and educated music critic we have today in India. An art breakdown that's as exceptional as the art.

This is an incredible, almost bar by bar, illustration and deconstruction of the first movement of Ilaiyaraaja’s Symphony No. 1. I’m speechless and in tears. Watched the whole thing in one sitting. Thank you, Nishad. This is your masterpiece. God bless you!

There are very few who can review Ilaiyaraaja's Valiant like this and @indoencers is one of them.

I had the wonderful opportunity to interview professional choral vocalist Vineel Mahal recently, who has been on a fascinating journey bring Indian classical music to the choral world. Such a knowledgeable and fun person! Check out the full episode :) buzzsprout.com/1072666/episo…

WOW. Take a bow. This is so beautifully done. I actually love the slight messiness in certain parts of the arrangements (towards the ending for example); adds an element of rawness. Magale, then this - we need much more of melody Sai :)) youtu.be/d46-sQEedfE?si=lFhC…

This is one of the most beautiful interludes I've heard recently. Starts with the unique Navtar instrument invented by Vishnu Ramprasad, goes into a more folk-ish violin melody, and then Sai comes in with his vocals; the moment at 2:18 gets me so excited every time!
A surprising, beautiful moment in “Nallaru Po” comes around 1:27, when a veena-like instrument and the peppy percussion seem to revel in, and celebrate the hero’s ability to say, “Nallaru po.” There’s something almost religious, noble, about that portion. Azhagu, azhagu.

Seeing this news reminded me of the absolutely gorgeous re-interpretation Anirudh did of Swagatham Krishna. Fingers crossed we hear of this kind of arrangements in this tribute! (Goes without saying that he is an out-of-the-box choice though haha) youtu.be/SKBIWO5NLgI?si=fP4M…

youtu.be/k9NOyRrEYOQ?si=HNDt… Completely obsessed with this song. The sargam bits brings me to tears. And he's only 17! Absolutely unbelievable. I'm SO excited to see him grow even more and to hear his music develop and evolve further

youtu.be/9-0l8PFBePQ?si=5lhj… Beautiful beautiful album. Rahman almost single-handedly carrying the torch for melodies in an era where we seem to be moving away from it. Across Gandhi Talks, MVA, and Batwara, insane number of stunning melodies in the span of a few months!

Couldn't help myself! A short transcription of the ending :)
The ending here is mindblowing. The shift into the minor from 4:06, the beautifully dissonant descending bassline at 4:13, the new colours stemming from the reharmonization at 4:22, and the sublime Ga-Pa-Sa Ma-Pa-Sa ending motif from 5:05...all so subtle yet SO deep in emotion!
