I admit that I completely broke down today. I cried uncontrollably. I couldnโt hold myself together after witnessing what I saw with my own eyes.
Today, we went to film a journalistic report inside the displacement tents along the seashore. I swear, what we witnessed was beyond what any human being should have to endure.
I saw men crying bitterly. Men I had never seen cry when they lost their children or when their homes were destroyed. Today, I saw them crying because they were powerless to do the simplest thing: protect their children from the water and the cold.
We spoke to families who told us they had spent the entire night carrying their children in their arms after floodwater covered the floors of their tents and soaked their mattresses. They couldnโt find a single dry place to put their children. They couldnโt even give them a few hours of sleep.
I saw children no older than five, without proper clothes to protect them from the cold, without heating, and without a dry place to sleep. Children shivering inside tents that cannot keep out the rain, protect them from the wind, or provide even the most basic sense of safety.
What more must happen for this world to act? How much more suffering must people endure before someone remembers that they are human beings?
I am sick of this world. I am sick of its hypocrisy and empty slogans. To hell with a world that talks endlessly about human rights while leaving children to drown inside their tents. To hell with everyone who has witnessed this suffering and chosen silence, and to hell with the governments and institutions that have the power to act but continue to turn their backs on us.

A 13 year old boy from Gaza City returned from Egypt just 20 days ago. Today, he went to play a football match with his friends. He was a talented and skilled football player.
He scored a goal and started running joyfully to celebrate, but a randomly fired bullet ended his life instantly.
He celebrated his goal and died in the very same moment.
He returned to Gaza after travelling, only to find death waiting for him here.

Whatever else you say about the ANC as they face historic losses this election, let it be known that this particular mighty liberation party accepted the will of the people. Despite have the might of the state behind them they have repeatedly conceded their losses. This is sadly rare on our continent and should be appreciated.

The contradiction of our times: my daughter was injured while playing with other children. The wound became infected and is now septic. I spent from 08:00 until 10:00 at Edenvale Hospital today to see a doctor.
Yesterday, after spending two hours on the benches, I left without seeing a doctor because someone had botched her appointment.
The care is free. In a private clinic or hospital, we would have paid thousands of rands. But there is a painful catch: the hospital is not as clean as a private facility, and the nurses, doctors and other staff are overwhelmed.
The doctor treating my daughter started her shift at 7am and will only knock off at 7am tomorrow. I once met a doctor from Myanmar who told me he had worked three nights in a row at the same hospital without any rest.
My daughter has always wanted to be a doctor. But after speaking with the doctor today, she says she has changed her mind. She now wants to be an IT guru so she can have weekends with her family. I can understand why that conversation made an impression on her.
Experiences like this remind me why SAFTU and the working class are marching against neoliberalism and austerity. When you see the conditions inside our public institutions, you understand why unity between workers and the broader working class must be a priority. We cannot allow anything to come before it.
These are the contradictions we will confront when we reach the ballot box today. They must be reflected in the choices before us on the ballot paper.
