I don't have a dog in the Barstool handicap controversy, don't care who does or doesn't play in this event, and don't have an opinion on the decision that was made. While I don't care about or have an opinion on this situation, I am a numbers nerd, and the odds a 13.9 index with a course handicap of 18 shoots 77 on a par 71 in a tournament are a lot higher than the 1 in 500 number that ChatGPT gave to Riggs. With a course rating of 72.8 and slope of 135. The gross 77 turns into a net 59 (net 12 under). The net score differential for this round is -10.4. Using the information referenced below, the odds of this are 1 in 37,000. The probability that was used by Riggs via ChatGPT as seen in the screenshot below is not accurate based on the information referenced below. I also asked this question to ChatGPT and received a different response than Riggs. A response that matches the information referenced below. The screenshot of my question and the response from ChatGPT is in the screenshot below. My question to ChatGPT returned the odds at 1 in 37,000. The link below is from Dean Knuth's website. That site has a ton of info and articles on everything handicapping. Who is Dean Knuth? He is literally the guy that created the course rating and slope system for the USGA. He led handicap research at the USGA for 27 years. He is known as the "Pope of Slope". A link to his expanded bio is below. The odds of shooting an exceptional tournament score can be found at this link, and in the USGA document below: popeofslope.com/sandbagging/… Link to Dean Knuth's bio: popeofslope.com/about/index.… Again, I do not have a dog in this fight. Simply pointing out that the odds are higher than 1 in 500 based on the info referenced in this post. I am in no way an expert on the handicap system, so if I am missing something here, always happy to learn where I am off.
