The Canary will be closed for the foreseeable future. As of today (Monday 19 October), the Canary will be closed indefinitely. After multiple attacks this year, from Lloyds debanking us to former employees spreading malicious lies on social media, the situation has become unsustainable, both financially and operationally. After 11 years, we take this action with deep sadness and regret. The extent of the lies, defamation, and harassment by ex-staff - coupled with the constant attacks by the state and those who’d see us destroyed - has become too much. However, it is not over. This week, we will publish what really happened at the Canary and push back against the vicious campaign against our team and us. We may be down, but we’re not out yet.

Our brazenly corrupt political/media culture distilled in 10s. When most politicians watch this chummy crap or see Farage heading GB News for £££, they don't think "god, what an insult to democracy, journalism & the public's intelligence". They think "god, I wish that was me!"
Labour govt minister Yvette Cooper tells Labour peer Ayesha Hazarika, who is interviewing her, "you're a journalist"

A society open to all races need not accept practices that destroy or exploit the most vulnerable. Responsible criticism makes it possible to challenge harmful behaviour without confusing reasoned judgements with indiscriminate condemnation. theprisma.co.uk/2026/10/19/p…

Only the government could devise such an openly antagonising & ultimately dysfunctional funding model. They are sadistically obsessed with a ‘device linked’ licence, rather than making any serious case for public investment in British media
Only the BBC could devise a funding model where the solution to people not watching your programmes is to charge them for watching somebody else's. Under this logic, every time I order a Domino's, I should send Pizza Hut £2.50 to support the future of British pizza.

And this is *exactly* why we need independent journalism, folks. And the only hope of that is if people pay for it. This is not news, it's propaganda.

The CMA wants Google to show users a choice of search engines. We back it in principle, but it must be judged on whether competition improves, and Google shouldn't decide which rivals appear. Read our joint response with publisher bodies below: ima.press/googles-search-cho…
