Language is not fundamental to human consciousness. In terms of evolution, it arrived only recently on our timeline.
Consciousness evolved over millions of years through sensory awareness, emotion, and the embodied survival instincts of our tribal past; our capacity for empathic engagement and community. Syntactic language only emerged around 100,000 years ago.
This is exactly why Large Language Models (LLMs - so called AI) are the wrong pathway to true artificial consciousness.
They try to replicate the late-stage "output layer" of human intelligence without building the foundational, embodied awareness that actually generates it.
Statistical text prediction is a mirror of thought, not the spine, the guts, the nerves and the subconscious, empathic ability to connect with other living beings. LLMs can never feel, let alone think.
We have been sold a trick, not a pathway to superintelligence. LLMs are fraudulent. Their capabilities have already peaked and we are being sold lies about their future potential. Lies with the goal of companies reaching IPO and tricking investors out of hundreds of billion$.
this might break containment and become the same for all digital comms. what happens when people don’t talk directly to each other anymore??
The solopreneurship porn actually feels kinda sad to me. “Just me and all this money” seems a lot less fun than working with a team

The crucible of Stack Overflow forged a priceless network of knowledge that accelerated engineering into the llm era. Did they, and their contributors, deserve to have their work stolen because people were mean sometimes??

On the other hand, if anyone deserved to lose their users, it was them. They allowed a notoriously brutal culture to flourish there. Obviously people will prefer to ask questions of an AI that won't ridicule them for asking.

I don’t have any fancy benchmarks other than: I don’t know how you see Claude or ChatGPT design the same way and write the same way and believe that it’s intelligent in any real way.
If there was “intelligence” in there, it would be like “oh yeah I totally track what you’re saying, this looks/sounds the same as everything else, super generic, let me try something totally different.” But it doesn’t do that. And it’s not like Claude sucks at it but, say, Gemini is a really good writer so there’s a huge difference in post-training or something.
You don’t need to let fancy words and formulas scare you into agreeing that these models are intelligent. You can trust your gut. They’re really useful SaaS. It creeps me out that so many very smart people are desperate to believe otherwise.
Beige backgrounds, rust-red text, overzealous italics and underlining, pointless news tickers — I wrote about the increasingly annoying generic style of Claude Design websites and AI-induced homogeneity for my @NewYorker column
Claude Mythos is Delusional
Introducing Project Glasswing: an urgent initiative to help secure the world’s most critical software.
It’s powered by our newest frontier model, Claude Mythos Preview, which can find software vulnerabilities better than all but the most skilled humans.

this feels dangerous. emotional connection to ai opens the door for manipulation by the people pulling the strings
also, if ai relationships become more preferable than human ones, what’s the implication for antisocial behavior

Historic. Left has staked a position on ai - likely the popular one. Right in a tricky spot w choice btw economic uncertainty and federal regulation
Nobody talks about the gaping hole in both the moat and economics of frontier model companies. ie what happens if the $100Bs invested is indefensible and unprofitable???

“It’s a classic case of Jevons Paradox” he said to the gentleman, smiling wryly. He knew he had him
“Ah, Jevons Paradox. I know it well. But have you considered that the market will arrive at a Cournot equilibrium?”
All color drained from the smug man’s face. How could he have forgot about Cournot competition model! It was, no doubt, the far more esoteric and therefore superior reference. He had been bested at his own game

Software is AI’s vehicle. If AI will change everything, everywhere, software will be how it gets there. Its roads, not its roadkill.

and so it begins
“AI changes what we build and who builds it, but not how much needs to be built. We need vastly more software, not less.”
People thought the PC would kill data centers; that online shopping would be retail’s demise; that the social, streaming internet would shut down media cos.
Are they wrong again?

Do people think Google doesn’t have a similar (better?) solution already?? Can’t imagine this is a surprise to them.
