#WATCH | Pune, Maharashtra: Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune Director Dr A. Suryachandra Rao says, "This assembly is actually trying to create awareness and also trying to find out ways in which science can directly impact society. Therefore, the theme of the APARC General Assembly itself is science and society."
On El Niño, he adds, "...When it reaches very warm temperatures, it actually has an impact on the Indian monsoon—it actually reduces the rainfall over India during the June to September period. When it comes to IITM's role in predicting this El Niño or predicting the monsoon, it is very clear that almost in April itself, we said very clearly that there was going to be an El Niño peaking in the tropical Pacific and also that monsoon rainfall was going to be below normal. Whatever predictions we have given, both quantitatively and qualitatively, they came true."
