When Jacob Misiorowski was 15 years old, his fastball topped out at 84 miles an hour. He was 6 foot 5 and 160 pounds. Scouts had him ranked the 255th best right handed pitcher in the country and the 6th best in Missouri. This year he threw a pitch 105.5 miles an hour. That is the fastest pitch any starting pitcher has thrown since baseball started tracking it in 2008. And he just finished a season that only three men have had since 1950. Misiorowski led all of Major League Baseball in strikeouts with 252, in ERA at 1.80, and in opponent batting average at .157. Hitters batted .157 against him. For the year. The last three pitchers to lead baseball in all three of those in the same season were Mike Scott in 1986, J.R. Richard in 1979, and Sandy Koufax in 1965. That is the entire list. He is sixth on that list, in his first full season, at 24 years old. Now go back to the kid who threw 84. He is from Grain Valley, Missouri, outside Kansas City, and he grew up a Kansas City Royals fan. He went 9-2 with a 1.48 ERA as a junior at Grain Valley High School. Then COVID canceled his senior season entirely. The year scouts would have watched him, there was nothing to watch. He had committed to Oklahoma State. He ended up at Crowder College, a junior college in Neosho, Missouri, instead. He tore his meniscus his first year there. Then he came back and went 10-0 with 136 strikeouts in 76 innings, and by then the body had caught up to the arm. He was 6 foot 7. He was throwing 98. At the MLB Combine he threw the eight fastest pitches of the entire event and averaged 99.8 miles an hour. The Milwaukee Brewers took him 63rd overall in 2022 and paid him 2.35 million dollars, well over what that pick is worth. His first big league start, in June 2025, he threw five innings and gave up no hits. His second start he was perfect through six against the Minnesota Twins. After five career starts they put him on the All Star team, the fastest anybody in the history of the league has ever gotten there. People argued about whether he deserved it. He had made five starts. This year he answered it. Eleven strikeouts in five innings on Opening Day, the most any Brewers pitcher has ever had in one. A month of May where he threw 29 straight scoreless innings and finished with a 0.23 ERA. 200 strikeouts in 130 innings, the second fastest anybody has ever gotten there. And his name now sits in a sentence with Sandy Koufax because a kid nobody could see at 84 miles an hour kept growing until the whole sport had to look.
