NASA's first job, before it put a man in space, was to find the meal that leaves the least behind. The answer was steak and eggs, and it has been the launch breakfast for 65 years.
The problem was the suit. A Mercury astronaut was sealed into a pressure suit, bolted into a capsule the size of a phone box, and left on top of a rocket for hours. He could not take anything off. There was no toilet, and no plan for one.
So in July 1960 the Air Force handed the question to a nutritionist called Beatrice Finkelstein. She had to feed the man so he stayed strong, clear-headed and full, for as long as it took, on the least possible waste.
She wrote a menu for the last 3 to 4 days before flight. High protein, low residue. Meat, eggs, very little else. Residue is the polite word for whatever the body cannot use and has to send back out. On her figures, beef and eggs produced almost none. The body took nearly all of it.
On the morning of 5 May 1961, Alan Shepard sat down to steak and eggs, went out to the pad, and became the first American in space.
It worked so well that nobody dared change it. John Glenn ate it. The crew of Apollo 11 ate it on the morning they left for the Moon. Shuttle crews ate it. Astronauts are superstitious, and this is the one ritual with a medical file behind it.
Look at what that file says. The best funded engineers on earth needed a food that was nearly all nutrition and next to no waste, to fuel a man through the most demanding day of his life, and they did not pick porridge.
Down here the same breakfast comes with a warning, and we are advised to swap it for the bran.
NASA ran the test in 1960. The bran is the residue.

"Then came the fatigue. I pushed through. I was miserable. I kept grinding along, kept trying to work. Thought I could outwill it. That was a massive mistake."
"By early 2024 I could no longer work, so I stepped down from running AG1. Through 2025 the dizziness episodes kept getting worse. Then one day the rocking and the pressure came on harder than ever. And never left."
"The doctors who finally pieced it together found that my body is still producing large amounts of COVID spike protein, five years on, with no virus in me. I have uncontrollable inflammation: microclots, damaged blood vessels, my immune system attacking my own body."

Toxoplasmosis... causa tumores oculares, meningioma, leucemia y linfomas.

In 1999 climbers found George Mallory's body high on Everest, 75 years after he vanished, and the clothes he died in were still on him. They were wool, silk and cotton. In 2006 somebody put on an exact copy and climbed the mountain in it.
For decades the story had been that Mallory and Irvine were doomed by their kit. Tweed jackets and woolly jumpers at 28,000 feet. Brave amateurs, dressed for a grouse moor.
The body told a different story. Mallory was wearing 8 thin layers. Silk next to the skin, then fine wool, then more silk, more wool, a flannel shirt, and a windproof cotton outer woven so tightly it turned the snow.
Four British universities took fragments from the body and rebuilt the whole outfit, thread for thread. A mountaineer called Graham Hoyland wore it on Everest.
He reported that it was warm. It was also lighter than the modern down suit his companions were wearing. The silk layers slid over the wool, so he could move his arms freely, which a man in a padded plastic suit cannot. The wool held its warmth when damp with sweat. He said he would have been comfortable going for the summit in it.
The researchers concluded the clothing was fully up to the job.
So the gear of 1924 was not the weak point. A sheep and a silkworm had solved the problem of the coldest place on earth, at less weight, before anyone had invented nylon.
Then we spent a century replacing it with petroleum and told ourselves the men who came before were underdressed.

Butter was eaten for 8,000 years without a single recorded complaint. Then a committee looked at it for an afternoon and decided it was trying to kill us.
6500 BC: The first farmers are churning. Their pots are still greasy.
1700 BC: The Irish bury butter in bogs by the barrel, as savings. Nobody has ever buried a tub of margarine in the hope of finding it later.
AD 77: Pliny sneers that butter is the food of barbarians. The barbarians are a head taller than Pliny.
1911: Americans eat 18lb of butter each a year. Heart attacks are so rare that doctors write them up as curiosities.
1961: The American Heart Association tells the nation to swap butter for vegetable oil. No trial has tested this. They are quite sure.
1984: Time magazine does a frowning face out of 2 fried eggs and a rasher of bacon. Britain makes the advice official the same year.
1997: Butter eating in America hits 4lb a head. The public has done exactly as it was told.
Obesity has more than doubled. Diabetes is up sevenfold. The fat that took butter's place came out of a seed, by way of a refinery.
2014: The largest review ever done finds no link between saturated fat and heart disease. Time runs a new cover. It says Eat Butter.
2016: A study of 636,000 people finds butter does nothing to the heart and slightly lowers the risk of diabetes.
So the experts took 53 years, several billion pounds and a generation of other people's arteries to catch up with a Bronze Age Irishman and a hole in a bog.
Nobody was sacked. The retraction ran in a medical journal. The accusation had run on the front of every tub.

10. She said the last thing — and the one that ties everything together — is that AirPods Pro 3 have 10 hours of battery life in Transparency mode, which is the mode you use when they're acting as hearing aids.
Battery life is the biggest limitation of traditional hearing aids. They're designed for all-day wear.
"AirPods Pro 3 give you up to 10 hours of battery life in Transparency mode. That's the mode the hearing aid feature uses. Ten hours is a full workday. Ten hours is a full day of errands, meetings, and conversations. For most people, that's enough. You charge them in the case. You get more hours. The case gives you additional charges."
"Traditional hearing aids have advantages. All-day battery. Behind-the-ear designs. Android compatibility. They're medical devices designed for medical needs. But for mild to moderate loss, for people who don't want to spend $5,000, AirPods Pro are a real option. Ten hours is enough. The case is enough. The price is enough."
She said the broader point is that AirPods Pro are a hearing platform, not just headphones.
"People think AirPods are earbuds. They're not. They're a computer with speakers attached. They have a hearing test. A hearing aid. Noise cancellation. Transparency. Conversation Boost. Live Listen. Background Sounds. Media Assist. Ten hours of battery. Most people use 20% of what's there. The other 80% is in menus they've never opened."
She said the whole system takes 15 minutes to set up and changes how you hear everything.
"Take the hearing test. Set up Hearing Aid if you qualify. Turn on Media Assist. Customize Transparency with Conversation Boost. Add Live Listen to Control Center. Enable Background Sounds for focus or tinnitus. Adjust amplification from Control Center. Check your environmental noise levels. Total time: 15 minutes. Total change: you hear better. You hear music better. You hear conversations better. You hear the world better. Same AirPods. Same price. Completely different device. The features are there. They're just not where you'd expect them to be."
A limitation that matters:
She said this clearly, and it's important.
"AirPods Pro are FDA-authorized for mild to moderate hearing loss. Academic research shows their real-ear output is lower than prescription hearing aids fitted to clinical targets, especially at higher frequencies and higher input levels. For severe hearing loss, for complex listening environments, for people who need all-day battery and clinical fine-tuning, traditional hearing aids are still the right choice. AirPods are a bridge. They're not a replacement for everyone. But for millions of people with mild loss who've never done anything about it because of cost or stigma, they're a door that didn't exist before."

An audiologist put in a pair of AirPods Pro for the first time. She took them out after 30 seconds and said:
"These are hearing aids. Apple just doesn't call them that."
She's fitted hearing aids for 12 years. $3,000–$7,000 per pair. She told me:
"Your AirPods Pro have a clinical-grade hearing test built in. The same test I charge $200 for. It maps frequencies your ears miss and adjusts every sound that enters your ears in real time. Music. Podcasts. Phone calls. Everything. Personalized to YOUR hearing. Not default. Not generic. Yours."
"Your AirPods amplify human voices and lower background noise when you start talking. My $5,000 hearing aids do the same thing. Yours cost $249."
"Your AirPods track your head in 3D and place sound around you like a movie theater. My hearing aids can't do that. Yours can."
"Your AirPods measure environmental sound levels and warn you when noise around you is damaging your hearing. Most $5,000 hearing aids don't have this feature. Your $249 earbuds do."
"Your AirPods play clinical background sounds — white noise, rain, ocean — for tinnitus relief and focus. My patients pay $15/month for apps that do the same thing. Your AirPods do it free."
"Your AirPods have a Live Listen mode that turns your iPhone into a remote microphone. Place your phone on a table across a restaurant. Every word streams into your ears. I recommend $300 accessories for this. Your AirPods do it built in."
"Apple built a $5,000 hearing aid and priced it at $249. Then they marketed it as earbuds for music. 300 million people bought them. Almost nobody knows what they actually are."
Here are 10 AirPods Pro features most owners have never turned on:

Ask the oldest people on earth what they ate every day, and not one of them says kale.
Supercentenarians on their own daily habit:
- Emma Morano, Italy, 117: three eggs a day, two raw, for 90 years
- Susannah Mushatt Jones, USA, 116: four rashers of bacon each morning
- Maria Branyas, Spain, 117: three yoghurts a day
- Misao Okawa, Japan, 117: mackerel on rice, and sleep
- Violet Brown, Jamaica, 117: fish, mutton and cow foot
Morano added raw minced beef to the eggs, on the advice of a doctor in 1919 who is no longer available for follow-up. She outlived him by some margin. She outlived everybody.
Jones kept a sign in her kitchen that read: bacon makes everything better.

It’s a reality of aging that we need more dietary protein to keep muscle mass. If you're over 65, the source of your protein may matter as much as the amount.
Researchers gave older adults two meals with the same amount of protein and the same calories. One was built around beef, and the other was vegan. After the beef meal, muscle protein synthesis was about 47% higher. After the vegan meal, it barely moved from where it was before eating (PMID 37972895).
As we age, muscle gets harder to build and easier to lose. We need to make high-quality animal protein the anchor of every meal.

ZINC SUPPLEMENTATION GUIDE:
Over a billion people worldwide don't get enough - and it's CRITICAL for:
➥ Hormones
➥ Immunity
➥ Mitochondrial function
➥ Skin health
➥ Gut health
& more.
There are multiple forms, all with different levels of absorption and tolerability.
In general:
➥ Zinc oxide
➥ Zinc sulfate
tend to be more poorly absorbed and can cause more stomach irritation or nausea.
You can still use them to increase zinc intake, BUT:
➥ Zinc bisglycinate (glycinate)
➥ Zinc citrate
➥ Zinc acetate
➥ Zinc gluconate
are generally better absorbed and better tolerated.
Zinc picolinate is better absorbed - but the zinc stays tightly bound to the picolinate molecule, potentially making it less bioavailable.
It is best to start at a lower dose (~10-15 mg elemental zinc) and increase thereafter, as taking too much at once can cause nausea.
Personally, I prefer zinc bisglycinate, and typically use 15-30 mg daily when supplementing.
Avoid taking zinc alongside:
➥ Iron supplements
➥ Calcium supplements
➥ High-fiber meals
as they can reduce absorption.
Long-term high-dose zinc supplementation (>40 mg/day) can lower copper status, so consider ensuring adequate copper intake from foods or supplements if using higher doses for extended periods.
Food sources of zinc include:
➥ Oysters
➥ Red meat
➥ Shellfish
➥ Eggs
➥ Dairy
Oysters are by far the richest source and can provide several days' worth of zinc in a single serving.
If you're using zinc therapeutically, consistency tends to matter more than mega-dosing. A moderate daily intake generally works better than taking very large doses intermittently.

Rice paddies heat the planet about as much as every aeroplane in the sky, and nobody has made a documentary about your pilau.
A flooded paddy is a man-made swamp. Under the water, with no oxygen, the same family of microbes that live in a cow's rumen break down plant matter and give off methane. It is a rumen with the cow taken out. Rice accounts for around a tenth of all the methane humans cause, and about 1.5% of all greenhouse gases, which puts it level with global aviation.
The response so far:
- Streaming exposés on rice: none
- Celebrities going rice-free for January: none
- Rice-free Mondays in school canteens: none
- Carbon labels on a bag of basmati: none
- Countries taxing it: none
Denmark, meanwhile, will bill its farmers for every cow and pig from 2030.
The cow's methane comes from grass, which pulled that carbon out of the air last spring, on ground too wet or too steep to plough, and it arrives with beef, milk, leather and a fertilised field. The paddy's methane arrives with a bowl of starch.
The chemistry is identical. One of them is a plant, and plants do not get prosecuted. The climate case against your dinner depends on only ever pointing the instrument at the animal.
Who decided which methane counts?

Tomar estatinas no ofrece ningún beneficio.
