I have been wondering about the peculiar motivational force of social norms for a long time. Here is our latest stab at mapping the territory combining Carol Dweck’s theory of psychological needs and the computational approach to intrinsic motivations. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

I had a fantastic time speaking today at the Institute for Cognitive Sciences and Technologies in Rome; and on the 19th I’ll be giving a keynote to the Italian Association for Cognitive Sciences entitled – “Discovering Cognitive Structure using Large-Scale Social Data and Artificial Intelligence.” It’s an exciting community here with lots of interesting discussion about the future integration of cognitive and social science. As Max Tegmark said, the 3 things AI researchers knew would not be done in the future because it was obviously dangerous, were:
1) Don’t teach it about humans so it can’t manipulate us, (YouTube recommender algos etc.)
2) Don’t let it access all human knowledge (connect it to the internet, teach it on all human written content), and
3) Don’t give it actuators (APIs to everything humans do digitally).
It is completely nuts that this is being done.
