I had already planned my first goal back I was kissing the badge of this club who has supported me and my family through the darkest days of my career over the past 18 months. I absolutely adore and love Coventry City. All my close friends and family know that. I’m a fan and always will be and I will 100% apologise to anyone who thought the timing was bad as my first goal back just happened to be against my hometown club. Good luck to Frank and the boys for the rest of the season. PUSB🩵

🚨 POINTLESS STAT OF THE DAY #140
⚽ THE CONSECUTIVE GOAL LADDER: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!
What's the longest run in English league football where a team scores exactly one more goal in every successive league match?
We are exhausted at Statty HQ as we have trawled through 212,532 English league results dating back to 1888, searching for the ultimate goal ladder!
🥇 NEWCASTLE UNITED
The record overall and in the top flight is SIX consecutive matches, achieved by Newcastle in February–April 2025!
❌ Liverpool 2–0 Newcastle
⚽ West Ham 0–1 Newcastle
⚽⚽ Newcastle 2–1 Brentford
⚽⚽⚽ Leicester 0–3 Newcastle
⚽⚽⚽⚽ Newcastle 4–1 Man Utd
⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽ Newcastle 5–0 Crystal Palace
From zero to five in six matches! Newcastle won five of the six, finishing with that 5–0 win over Crystal Palace on 16 April 2025.
TOON ARMY FANS WERE YOU AWARE OF THIS POINTLESS RECORD? 🤣
We went deeper and looked at other divisions.....👀
🥈 TIER 2 - CHAMPIONSHIP / OLD 2ND DIVISION
Four teams managed the five-match ladder from zero to four:
🔹 Grimsby Town December 1906–January 1907
🔹 Charlton Athletic September–October 1962
🔹 Crystal Palace September–October 2005
🔹 Stoke City October–November 2020
Stoke's run saw them go from zero against Swansea to one against Rotherham, two at Watford, three at Reading and four against Huddersfield in a 4–3 win!
🥉 TIER 3 - LEAGUE ONE / OLD 3RD DIVISION
14 different teams achieved the five-match sequence. Exeter City did it twice!
🔹 Newport County December 1923
🔹 Millwall April 1938
🔹 Exeter City February–March 1937
🔹 Carlisle United December 1930–January 1931
🔹 Brighton December 1948–January 1949
🔹 Halifax Town April 1957
🔹 Barnsley August–September 1953
🔹 Mansfield Town September 1958
🔹 Queens Park Rangers February–March 1967
🔹 Cambridge United December 1977–January 1978
🔹 Gillingham December 1977–January 1978
🔹 Oldham Athletic February–March 2002
🔹 Exeter City December 2024
🔹 Peterborough United April–May 2021
🔹 Shrewsbury Town May–September 1971
Exeter's most recent run began with zero against Stockport in December 2024, before progressing through one, two and three goals to finish with four against Crawley in a 4–4 draw!
🏅 TIER 4 - LEAGUE TWO / OLD FOURTH DIVISION
Just two teams made the five-match ladder:
🔹 Scunthorpe United October–November 2001
🔹 Shrewsbury Town March–April 2011
Shrewsbury went from a 5–0 defeat at Torquay to scoring one against Wycombe, two at Bradford, three at Rotherham and four against Macclesfield!
THE FINAL SCORE
Tier 1: 0 → 5 in six matches
Tier 2: 4 teams reached 0 → 4
Tier 3: 14 teams reached 0 → 4
Tier 4: 2 teams reached 0 → 4
No seven-match sequence of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 goals was found so Newcastle stand alone at the top of the goal ladder! ⚽📈

Michael’s pasing while all this Man City stuff going on is quite poignant really isn’t it.
Clubs like us, who had been well run, by life long fans were often ridiculed by the same media now bemoaning Man City’s actions.

I won 2 Premier League titles with Man City.
I won 1 Premier League title with Liverpool.
Liverpool also finished second to Man City twice while I was a Red.
If those titles are stripped from Man City and given to Liverpool, I’ll have 3 Premier League titles with Liverpool and 0 with Man City.
So even with Man City's cheating, I am still a 3-time Premier League winner.
Result.

🚨 POINTLESS STAT OF THE DAY #087
Andoni Iraola went back to Bournemouth yesterday and Liverpool won 1-0.
Which got me thinking…
How often does a manager actually beat his old Premier League club when managing against them for the first time ?
Obviously, I then had to spend far too long finding out. 😂
I looked at a selection of managers who went directly from one Premier League club to another, with no other senior managerial job in between. Then, for each move, I looked at their first Premier League meeting against their former club while still managing the new one.
Some managers did this several times, so they appear several times in the analysis.
The list included the likes of:
George Graham, David Moyes, Harry Redknapp, Sam Allardyce, Mark Hughes, Roy Hodgson, Alan Pardew
Graham Potter, Ron Atkinson, Tony Pullis, Steve Bruce
Martin O'Neill, Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Glenn Hoddle, José Mourinho, André Villas-Boas, Nuno Espírito Santo, Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman
Brendan Rodgers, Paul Lambert, David O'Leary, Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe, Gary O'Neil, Enzo Maresca, Thomas Frank, Antonio Conte, Claude Puel, Paul Jewell, Owen Coyle, Marco Silva, Frank Lampard, Martin Jol, Chris Hughton, Peter Reid, Roberto Di Matteo, Ruud Gullit
Graeme Souness, Glenn Roeder, Mike Walker, Avram Grant, Tim Sherwood, Oliver Glasner and of course...
Andoni Iraola
70 qualifying manager moves.
64 actually got to face their old club.
The first-meeting record:
🟢 26 wins
🟡 21 draws
🔴 17 defeats
So… 40.6% won their first reunion.
Iraola can now add himself to the list after yesterday.
And before I disappear down another pointless football rabbit hole…
Have we missed anyone? 👀
