In northern Ethiopia, our teams are working to get life-saving food, health and other help to people in need.

Fighting continues to harm and displace civilians, drive up needs and disrupt our work.

All parties must give aid workers safe and rapid access.

These are rough times - exactly what the UN was built for. My interview with @BBCr4today👇
"The UN is under sustained attack, the values that forged us feel like they're dying...with that war time generation." UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher says now is the time for 'moral ambition' in leadership, particularly when 'the public square is dominated by weak, insecure figures'.

The world’s most overlooked crises cannot become forgotten crises. I've approved $160M from the UN Global Emergency Fund, CERF for 12 underfunded crises, with $10M set aside so people with disabilities aren't left behind. 87m people to reach. No time to waste.

Unacceptable targeting and killing of colleagues delivering humanitarian aid in Sudan. This must stop.
WFP strongly condemns an aerial attack that hit two contracted trucks carrying WFP food commodities in South Kordofan on Saturday, 3 October 2026. One driver was killed in the air strike. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Full statement:

This week, I’ve been sharing a piece of card with leaders. 10 access asks. 11m lives we can save if we can reach them. Don’t back humanitarian diplomacy in abstract terms. Back us to get food, medicine and education through. Let’s hold each other to account for delivering.

Between a busy schedule of meetings here at the UN General Assembly, I ran into Alexander de Croo @alexanderdecroo. We shared what we’re hearing – and why the world must move faster to end conflict. #UNGA

We have so little time to stop weapons moving beyond human control.
During our coverage of #UNGA81 this week in New York, I sat on "Diplomatic Avenue" show, I had a deep dive with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Tom Fletcher @UNReliefChief @UNOCHA on the worsening Humanitarian Situation in Yemen and Sudan. USG Fletcher told me about his hopes for this week: " What we're trying to do Talal this week is to reach 11 million people who are currently in the highest severity areas, what we call (category) four and five who we can't get to because of the conflict lines, because of a lack of energetic diplomacy, and so we'll be pushing the world leaders and I will have a list of requests for them" On Yemen I asked him, will the UN declare famine in Yemen soon, are we on the brink of doing so? He answered: " What's clear already is that we have millions of people in food insecurity and very sadly moving up through those categories towards famine and I fear we will see these pockets of famine expanding" On Sudan he said with determination: " We need access, we need funding and then we need political support to end the conflict because ultimately until the war ends and the guns fall silent you know all we're doing is responding to the consequences of that conflict, of that crisis" And. about his message to the General Assembly this week USG Fletcher said: " One of the things I'm saying for this General Assembly is we face these huge threats as humanity and we are losing control of weapons right now and this week the leaders of the world have to take back control of these issues" Listen and watch the full 16:30 min. interview from a man appealing passionately to our common humanity to help our brothers and sisters in Sudan, Yemen and else where in the region. @antonioguterres @MelissaFleming @OSE_Yemen @yemen_mofa @Yemen_PM @YemenUN @GCCSG @UN_Sudan @SudanPMHamdok @SudanMissionUN @UNICEFSudan @SudanTribune_EN @UKUN_NewYork @USUN @aalrashed @KSAMOFA @AzALWASIL @ksamissionun @DicarloRosemary @zaedbinkami @malmhuain @Matar_Alahmadi @FaisalJAbbas @UNOCHA_Sudan @UN_PGA @UNHumanRights
