5. Comfort is the enemy of growth.
The "reforging" process is uncomfortable by design.
To truly scale, you must have the courage to evolve your own mindset before you can evolve the business and the team around you.
If you're comfortable, you aren't growing.
4. Focus is about what you say "no" to.
We ignored the noise to lean into high-velocity markets. That meant walking away from opportunities that didn't fit the mission.
To our partners: We don't scale in a vacuum. Thanks for standing with us in the fight.
3. Hire people who can build ladders.
Radical evolution needs two things: institutional memory and new blood.
To the team: Whether you’ve been here for years or just jumped into the trenches - thank you. You embraced the pressure and got s*&% done.
2. What got us here won't get us there.
Founder intuition gets you to the starting line, not the finish line. We had to trade agility for discipline and fortify our core processes.
To our customers: Thank you for trusting our execution and letting us earn our seat at the table.
1. The only valuation that matters is your own vision.
We chose the long, uphill road of independence over the "safe harbour" of immediate certainty.
To our investors: Thank you for backing the hard choice. Walking away from short-term safety requires guts, not just capital.
The guy on the left had no clue. No idea what being a #startup #founder is really like.
The one on the right has battle scars, but is still smiling.
2025 was a year of "reforging" for @AvertroSecurity.
Here are 5 lessons on the price (and privilege) of independence. 🧵👇
NIST CSF 2.0 was officially released today. But it's not easy to figure out what's changed. So, I updated my #NIST #CSF "circuit board".

Back in December, I delivered the occasional address / commencement speech for the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) graduating class of 2023 at @UNSW.
Here is the transcript of that speech.

Wishing everyone a great 2024 ahead!
Happy New Year! From all of us at #Avertro!
I’m currently sitting in SoHo at Dominique Ansel Bakery eating way too much sugar. The table on my left is talking about #cybersecurity. The one on my right, #AI and imposter syndrome. I must be in some real life version of LinkedIn today.
Didn’t realize I’d be watching Harden’s first game as an @LAClippers player when I got these @nyknicks tickets weeks ago. But here I am at @TheGarden.
At the @nyknicks v @cavs game @TheGarden. The rule where if there’s an @NBA game on, I have to go still stands right?
All the #startup advice nowadays is to “be like a camel”. 🐪
So, I spent some time with one to understand WTF all the VCs are on about 😉

"Many Australian boards and executives are yet to implement a sound cyber governance strategy," according to @nortonjamie, who sits on the executive advisory board here at Avertro.
