I first saw Nana Patekar in Ankush. For our generation, it felt like the second arrival of the Angry Young Man, years after Amitabh Bachchan, with one difference. Amitabh’s anger in films like Deewaar and Trishul was largely personal. A son fighting the injustices done to him and his family. Nana’s anger was directed at the system, at society, at everything that was wrong around him. His anger was raw, restless and unpredictable. There was frustration in his voice, pain in his eyes and a frightening honesty in his expressions. He didn’t look like a larger-than-life hero. He looked like an ordinary man in the street, pushed beyond his limits. Later, films like Parinda, Prahaar, Trishagni, Khamoshi and Welcome revealed his remarkable range. But that first impression of Nana Patekar in Ankush never faded. Some actors play angry men. Nana made you feel the anger. #NanaPatekar
