Replying to @gustaf
nice to see YC looking at sweden. we currently have a solid tech ecosystem.
an important thing many outside investors may not realize: sweden is currently tightening immigration rules quite aggressively. in trying to fix past policy mistakes, the government is pushing through reforms that are already affecting thousands of non EU tech workers.
i'm an american design engineer. i've lived in sweden for 5 years. several senior developers i know at klarna and spotify are now planning to leave. our citizenship applications are being cancelled and the government is now proposing to make our permanent residency revocable too.
several industry groups are warning this could make sweden less attractive for international talent. worth factoring into the calculus if YC is looking at sweden long term.
EY notes it may affect âretention of international talentâ

and the head of swedenâs games industry raised similar concerns:

I think I mentioned my personal definition of (and pitch for) engineering, which was approximately:
âTo gain an understanding of how the world works and, by leveraging that understanding, improve it.â
Feels like the Tidö parties are driving Sweden over an economic cliff.
If you turn off the immigration tap (because youâre steered by the far right), but also you turn off the âchild benefitâ tap (because it leads to gang crime?)
Whoâs left to work the economy tomorrow?
Itâs like Europe learned nothing from the Trump years in the USA.
When the crazy politician proposes something dumb and self-destructive, itâs not just rhetoric playing to their base!
They actually want to do the incomprehensibly dumb thing.
Been dreaming a lot about buffets recently.
Like the one where I was in line for one with @kevinRbell, but he didnât have any payment methods that were accepted, so I footed the 1800 SEK per person for a group of ~20.
Or the one where I was told âthis buffet isnât for you.â

Really shameful for a minister from the Liberal Party (thatâs âliberalâ as in, the opposite of illiberal) to minimize criticism of his governmentâs instigation of authoritarian policies by comparing it to ârhetoricâ in the USA.
Does @matsperspektiv not find the ongoing threats to liberal democracy in the USA credible?
Or does he fail to see his partyâs complicity in eroding liberal democracy in Sweden?
Leadership is manipulating people to achieve a goal.
Good leadership is also ensuring the benefit to the people being manipulated is greater than the cost of being manipulated in the first place.
This came from a place of open source software maintenance, but I realized today that itâs basically a reformation of a classic Tableau core value, âwe use our software.â
Still hits!
This is an important but over-represented engineering archetype.
Equally important but less represented are engineers who care about the business, or those who care about customers, or those who care about strategy, or those who care about their colleagues.
You need âem all.
Engineers who truly care about their craft and their code are a rare breed and I very glad I get to work with so many of them.
A wise person (@natfriedman) once told me, "You have to care. Caring is the bare minimum."
I swear the Gothenburg metro area has the worst electric car infra. 1 of 6 chargers I stopped at tonight worked. Last airport run, it was 1 of 7.

Worse access to healthcare will certainly be playing a part too, but the types and ages of deaths suggest the USâs life expectancy problem is as much (if not more) a social problem than a health problem in terms of the way we should think about it.

The real winner of #Mello is the producer whoâs perfectly timed the shot of the âwooâ guy during the climax of Theozâ song. All three performances.
Sounds like an environment I wouldnât want to work in.
Either thereâs a significant lack of role/process clarity that should be addressed, or there are behaviors by individuals that really need addressed. Who just hijacks someone elseâs meeting?
Prediction: @MariaStenergard will install an ideologue/political operative in this post, likely hand-picked by SD.
There will only be limited coverage of this affront to agency autonomy (because the public generally doesn't care enough about Migrationsverket's day-to-day).

Malmer Stenergard (and immigration discourse in Sweden generally) is too focused on getting rid of âthe kind they donât want,â and not at all focused on attracting and retaining âthe kind they do want.â
We donât feel welcome, itâs a bureaucratic nightmare, and itâs getting worse
