I think this is especially problematic in math. A lot of elementary teachers are uncomfortable with math and can be unaware of how early math connects to later math, which topics are more critical and need more time, etc. The resources need to be very clear and well sequenced.
I was shocked when someone first told me that elementary teachers in some jurisdictions are encouraged not to use texts. That's a recipe for disaster. On the other hand, given the poor quality of some of the math texts/programs in the US and Canada right now, it's hard to say what's worse.
What are the most effective methods of improving student achievement? An NYT investigation.
For me, the data point in the bottom left quadrant is absolutely critical to understanding why student achievement goes wrong so often: teachers making up their own curriculum.

Nikole Hannah Jones’ article highlights one of the unsung benefits of the Education Freedom Tax Credit: public school students can use them for tutoring.
Not every family can afford this check and balance on underperforming schools, the tax credit can help.

I am so thankful my dad wasn’t trying to prove any points to himself or the world and just wanted to send my brother and me to the safest and best schools he could afford (which were not the best around and it tormented him that he couldn’t do more, so he taught us and our friends at home). He did this because he’d been forced into segregated, under-resourced schools before civil rights and knew you have one shot at an education and this isn’t a game.

Important for Arizona voters to know this fall:
School choice is under assault in Arizona, but the teachers union's effort might fail because they relied on felons convicted of heinous crimes—including manslaughter, kidnapping, human trafficking & sexual abuse of a minor—to do their dirty work. 🧵

Great piece by @PaulDBoyer. It is past time that govt schools focus on building an education system that educates instead of building a political machine that serves their political needs. azcentral.com/story/opinion/…
