So I picked up the iPhone duo. The hardware is absolutely incredible. The matte screen on the inside is lovely. And then I go to set up, and this is my experience. I don’t remember doing this in the past, but I do remember doing this for Windows.

So this is what Amazon looks like. It’s squished with a giant black bar on the right side on the front screen.

Not having Face ID is messing me up. I just sit there waiting for something to happen.

The thing I really like the most about this is that the hinge lets me leave it at any angle and that the matte screen on the inside is awesome.

So the Apple Wallet app doesn't look like it's optimized for the big screen of the duo. It's just the same stack of cards dead center and you can't swipe from anywhere. You have to swipe from touching on the card so you really have to stretch your thumb.

Ooh now I can wait for iCloud backup. I'll use this thing... eventually.

Okay, so I pick up my iPhone duo tomorrow and I’m quite skeptical about it. Siri has been disastrous, to say the least, and being locked into the Apple ecosystem is more on my mind these days. I know the hardware will probably be amazing, and the software will be fun but…

And I think that’s why I’m so adamant about voice to text, because it’s good as the on-screen keyboard is. it doesn’t beat voice to text and with the ability to build my own software, it might actually be time to switch.

And if you notice any typos in this, it’s because I’ve been using the built-in voice to text on iOS, and I didn’t catch it.

So the iPhone duo will support the Apple Pencil but not the Apple Pencil 2. It sort of feels like it only supports the old stuff, not the new stuff, which makes me feel like for a brand new launch, it's already sort of flawed.

Siri is the highlighted interface between you and the HomeView. I won't buy it. I don't think anyone should. Apple has had 16 years since acquiring Siri, yet things feel worse than they did a few years ago. I imagine people will still buy it. 14 day return policy.

I struggle with Siri daily. Something as basic as “set a reminder in 2 hours to do X” has gotten slower, less reliable, and half the time it just doesn’t understand me. This used to work. What happened? Why don’t the basics just work anymore?

This is really the thing I keep coming back to with Apple lately. The company is talking a lot about what’s next with AI, but I’d settle for the things I already rely on working really, really well. I wrote more about that here: mattgardner.com/posts/2026-1…

I really hoped Siri would become something amazing, but every time I use it I find myself having to correct it or repeat myself. It's making it difficult to want to stick with iPhone where I can't change the default assistant. Link in comments.

1. It rarely understands me 2. It's been texting people instead of setting reminders 3. I've tried resetting it and recalibrating it (turning hey siri on/off in settings prompts this) 4. With an iPhone, you're stuck with Siri as the default (and only) 5. 16 years of frustration.
