Meet MAGAt Bud Marty May, the 2022 Republican candidate for South Dakota’s District 27 House seat who traded the campaign trail for a jail cell just days after losing his election. On November 13, 2022, the 37-year-old was arrested in Pennington County and hit with a felony charge of second-degree rape using force or coercion. The allegations detail an aggressive encounter inside a Rapid City bar bathroom. According to court documents, the victim stated that May followed her into a bathroom stall, forced his way inside, locked the door, and assaulted her despite her verbal demands for him to stop. When initially confronted by law enforcement, May's story quickly unraveled. He first denied any involvement whatsoever, but when pressed by investigators, he changed his narrative, attempting to downplay the forced encounter by claiming the interaction "was simply a hug." While the felony case was ultimately dismissed by a judge in January 2023 because the victim chose not to cooperate with the state's prosecution, the public court records remain a permanent stain on his failed political aspirations.
