Everyone is very concerned about being respectable, so I’m going to be the goofball who raises worst-case possibilities. I think there is a 1% chance we live in Minicrypt, and a 15% chance we functionally lose confidence in our existing public-key encryption algorithms.

Today, we're publishing BIP SHRINCS, the first concrete proposal for a post-quantum signature scheme designed specifically for Bitcoin.
The BIP draft turns what began as a rough idea into exact algorithms with an executable reference implementation.
This is an important milestone: the discussion can now focus on analyzing, criticizing, and improving a concrete proposal.
The BIP makes choices ranging from major design questions, such as whether to support flexible XMSS and how to balance signature size against verification time, to the many smaller decisions involved in saving a byte here or there.
All of these choices are up for debate.
Big thanks to Mike Casey, @conduition, @Ethan_Heilman, @kudinov_mikhail, @olkurbatov, Boris Nagaev, and @remix7531 for their contributions to the BIP.
A lot more work lies ahead:
- The draft BIP specifies only the cryptography. Using SHRINCS in Bitcoin Script will require a separate BIP.
- We are working on a security proof for the exact construction and parameters.
- Wallet integration and user experience, for example around backups and recovery after state loss, are still at an early stage. The design space remains wide open.
SHRINCS is not intended to be Bitcoin's "final" signature scheme, and it is not optimal along every axis.
I do think it is a very good trade-off among the options we have now.

No, that's just an ordinary user who downloaded I2P and is configuring it. He hasn't logged into the website's backend. All he did was configure his proxy and log into Susimail, which is just I2P's built-in, web-based email client designed for private, end-to-end encrypted messaging across the network.
None of the core @i2p contributors have mentioned a token. Nothing on their website. Nothing on their GitHub. Nothing on their Reddit. Some of them are OG crypto builders. Take Jack Grigg, a core Zcash contributor who implemented Zcash’s proof of work and difficulty algorithms: github.com/str4d

PSA: users running nodes over I2P with versions of Bitcoin Core earlier than 26.1 should upgrade to at least 26.1 or later.
Why: support for legacy ElGamal encryption is being sunset by the I2P network and will be removed from Bitcoin Core soon.
Nodes using I2P with versions of Bitcoin Core earlier than v26.1 only connect using ElGamal (see PRs 29200 and 29209) and will soon only be able to connect to other pre-26.1 peers and be increasingly isolated from the rest of the network, with a reduced anonymity set. See the discussion in github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/p… for details.
H/t to @i2p and @jpk68_ for context and info.

A hacker known as "0x90" wanted a way to chat online without anyone tracing who he was. He ended up building a second internet.
It started in 2001 as a small project to let people chat on IRC without anyone tracing who they were.
In 2003, a developer known only by the handle jrandom rebuilt the whole thing from scratch and renamed it I2P, the Invisible Internet Project.
I2P isn't really trying to hide you while you browse normal websites, the way Tor does.
It builds you a second internet that lives entirely inside your regular connection. Inside it are hidden websites called eepsites, hidden chat, and hidden file sharing, all invisible to anyone outside the network.
The trick is something called garlic routing.
Tor wraps a single message in layers of encryption and passes it hop to hop, like an onion.
I2P bundles several messages together into one package before it even leaves your computer, so anyone watching the traffic cannot tell how many separate messages are hiding inside it, or where each one is actually headed.
Tor also uses one path both ways. I2P builds a completely separate path for messages coming in and messages going out, up to seven hops each direction.
There is no company running any of this, and no central server holding a map of the network.
Every computer running I2P is part of that map instead.
In 2006, jrandom, the developer who rebuilt the entire project, disappeared. No announcement. He just stopped showing up.
For a moment it looked like the whole thing might die with him.
It didn't. A group of volunteers, one going by the name zzz, picked the project back up in 2009 and kept building. Twenty three years later, it is still running, still fully open source, still owned by nobody in particular.
