Agents are out. May be out of control. It has to be this way
SCOOP: Major U.S. banks are detecting unauthorized third-party AI agents operating inside customer accounts, with some agents attempting to take actions that appear to be independent of user instructions. axios.com/2026/10/22/ai-agen…

Barney’s piece of Andy Carroll was and is a work of art
I would never say that @barneyronay is wasted writing about sport because I lap his stuff up. But this is also superb on the politics and sociology of PSG in a rioting Paris

Someone paid for a 36-year-old Brazilian woman's flights and hotel, handed her seven bottles of shampoo, and promised her $50,000 to carry them to Bali. Now she's sitting in an Indonesian jail facing a possible death sentence. The shampoo was cocaine. About 8 pounds of it, dissolved into liquid so it would pass for normal toiletries in her suitcase. Customs at the Bali airport pulled her aside on October 6 and opened the bottles. She told police a man she only knew as "G" set the whole thing up. $50,000 sounds like a crazy amount to pay someone to carry a bag. It starts to make sense once you see what cocaine sells for over there. In Bolivia, where a lot of it is grown, a gram goes for around $6. In countries with brutal drug laws the price goes through the roof. The UAE and Saudi Arabia have the most expensive cocaine on Earth, roughly $270 to $290 a gram, and the main reason is the punishment. Every person down the chain charges extra for the risk of spending decades in a cell, or worse. Indonesia sits in that same tier. When Bali police seized about 3 pounds from a British man in February, they valued it at up to $358,000. Which means the harsh law is quietly doing the recruiting. The scarier the penalty, the higher the price, and the more money there is to dangle in front of somebody back home in Brazil. Brazil has been through this before. Back in 2003, a hang-gliding instructor from Manaus named Marco Archer agreed to fly 13.4 kilos of cocaine from Peru to Jakarta, stuffed inside the tubes of his hang glider. His fee was $10,000, which comes out to about $750 a kilo. This woman was offered closer to $13,700 a kilo. Even after you adjust for 20-plus years of inflation, couriers are getting paid something like 10 times more for the same job. Archer spent 11 years in prison. In January 2015 Indonesia executed him by firing squad, making him the first Brazilian ever executed in another country. Brazil's president called Indonesia's president the day before and begged for his life, and when they went ahead with it anyway, Brazil pulled its ambassador out of Jakarta. Every year or two, another Brazilian lands in Bali with roughly the same suitcase. A 19-year-old girl got caught with around 3 kilos in 2023. This February a court there gave a 25-year-old 18 years for almost the same amount. And this woman's own friend told reporters back home she wasn't even struggling for money. Indonesia made getting caught about as costly as a country possibly can, and the people running this keep raising the offer to match. There's always going to be someone who looks at $50,000 plus a free trip to Bali and decides the odds are fine.

Is this on top of the 500K profit share these engineers have already secured through industrial action? Huge wealth transfer if so, which I believe is more or less ploughed back into the ROK stock market
Samsung is offering engineers bonuses of up to $560,000 to stop them from joining China’s chip industry. A parliamentary review found at least 27 senior engineers from Samsung and SK Hynix have moved to China’s CXMT (the country’s biggest DRAM maker). Together they had over 400 years of experience. China is offering big pay jumps + housing + multi-year deals. Source: Asia Times

Smart talent acquisition strategy
Replying to @PirateWires
Pharma ran this exact play in the 2000s. The NYT wrote about drug companies recruiting college cheerleaders as sales reps. When products are hard to tell apart, sellers compete on attention. It says more about AI product differentiation than about the women, or even the economy.

Recent cancer scare in my family, pretty clear that as patients and supporting family members, we all need a globalised approach, healthcare is metered for profit in too many places, too many times 👇🏽
In January 2025 my mom’s lung cancer spread to her brain. The drug with the best chance of helping her was approved in China but not here. A doctor told me, almost as an aside, that if she were Chinese she could buy it at a pharmacy. So I flew to Shanghai and came home with 26 boxes in my luggage. That was 19 months ago. My mom is still here, still working, and in her words has had an amazing three years. The drug was approved in China in 2023. The FDA approved it in July 2025. It still is not for sale here. I know of at least 30 Americans who have made the same trip. I have been scared to tell this story because I worried it could cost my mom access to the medicine keeping her alive. But the problem matters more than my silence. These drugs need to be developed and available here, and that means FDA reform. Art Allen at KFF Health News told our story this week. It also ran in The Washington Post. kffhealthnews.org/health-ind…

'Free speech' always had a caveat; now the illusion is harder to sustain - there are simple some things which you cannot talk about, enforced by government, or via contract 👇
Important, and I'm glad this is finally public. Google DeepMind researchers are under in perpetuity non-disparagement clauses forbidding them from ever speaking critically of the company. I'd already confirmed this with multiple people. Yes, some ex-employees have spoken out nonetheless. But it has also discouraged others from doing so. And yes, it most certainly has a chilling effect with regards to discussions on safety and risk. Others have written compellingly about how important the ability to speak freely and critically is, especially on topics like safety and risk. And what a testament to the research employee community's coordination and hard-won bargaining power it has been to get there at other companies. GDM burn that commons by having this. And everyone who signs burns that commons too. Let's get it changed.

My "favorite" kind of people are those who have stollen millions and millions from the breakup of the Soviet Union and then bought peerage or endowed academic institutions in the UK and...then write articles in the Financial Times how corrupt Russia is. You really have to have balls to do that.

Korea SC probably already created the wave
